Jason Lee's HSE journey at AtkinsRealis

Jason Lee began his career as a safety professional in December 2005, navigating diverse roles across industries that ranged from construction projects in process plants to maintenance services and major turnkey projects. Over his career, he has shifted between subcontractor, main contractor, and owner roles, strengthening his understanding of HSE from multiple perspectives.

Since joining AtkinsRéalis nearly two years ago, Jason’s role as HSE Manager for Industrial Asia has been instrumental in fostering a pervasive culture of HSE. Collaborating with colleagues across regions like Korea and Malaysia, his mission remains clear—to innovate and align regional practices with the Global HSE Management System.

AtkinsRéalis stands apart for its unwavering commitment to HSE as part of its business values, echoed in the words of Group CEO Ian Edwards, who emphasizes the importance of psychological safety. This ensures employees feel comfortable speaking up and learning through mistakes, all while contributing to safeguarding lives, assets, and the environment for today and future generations.

Why health and safety are paramount in the workplace

Workplace injuries and fatalities remain a stark reality worldwide. According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), millions of occupational accidents occur annually, many preventable through proper HSE measures. Every worker deserves to return home safely each day, and nurturing a safety-first as one of the core values is critical for achieving this objective.

Jason Lee recognizes that HSE is not just the responsibility of a single department but a collective commitment. Collaboration and communication form the bedrock of successful HSE initiatives, ensuring no standards are compromised and all employees are well-equipped to maintain workplace HSE.

The role of employee engagement in HSE culture

Employee involvement is critical when aiming for the greatest cultural impact on workplace safety. Encouraging active participation in HSE initiatives ensures that workers feel empowered to report hazards, share insights, and collaborate on solutions.

Jason advocates for swift communication and meaningful collaboration across all teams. By tapping into regional and cultural nuances, organizations can identify practical approaches to fostering HSE standards while maintaining operational efficiency.

The AtkinsRéalis approach to global HSE impact

At AtkinsRéalis, HSE is more than a policy; it is embedded in the organizational DNA. Global HSE policies reflect the company’s high-level commitment to protecting people, assets, and the environment. Every decision and action is aligned with AtkinsRéalis’s purpose of engineering a better future for the planet and its people.

Jason Lee underscores the importance of creating a structured HSE framework, offering clear guidance while empowering HSE focal points across Industrial Asia. This approach ensures both consistency and adaptability, reflecting the unique needs of regional operations.

Why workplaces must prioritize HSE today

HSE practices are not abstract principles; they save lives, enhance productivity, and reduce costs associated with accidents and downtime. Prioritizing HSE not only protects employees but also strengthens businesses and establishes reputations built on trust and accountability.

By tackling challenges like cultural diversity and resource limitations, organizations can set new HSE benchmarks, building workplaces where everyone feels valued and secure.
