From muddy sites to global projects: Ravindra’s journey with AtkinsRéalis

Ravindra’s engineering journey started on gritty construction sites and has taken him to leading major projects worldwide. With nearly two decades (19 years) of hands-on experience, his story is one of determination, learning, and quietly shaping the future of sustainable design.

Read his journey in his own words.

Where it all began

In 2006, fresh out of Walchand College of Engineering, Sangli, I began my career as a site engineer. I still remember those early days—working round the clock on concrete pours, battling heavy rains, and navigating Mumbai’s chaotic trains.

Every moment taught me something. But what changed the course of my career was one simple realization: while we executed plans on-site, the real decisions were made at the design desk. That was the turning point.

I knew I wanted to be the one shaping those decisions.

Designing for real life

From high-rise buildings to water infrastructure and mining projects, I’ve worked on designs across the world. One lesson that has stayed with me: a good design must be buildable, economical, and safe.

A mentor once told me, "We must avoid national waste." That advice shaped my thinking. Engineering isn’t just about drawings—it’s about real-world impact.

I’ve resolved countless site issues in real-time, and each one has made me more confident in my instincts.

The road to AtkinsRéalis

In July 2023, I came across a walk-in opportunity on LinkedIn. I was torn between meeting an old professor or attending the drive. I chose the interview, walked in with no expectations, and simply shared my journey.

That day left a lasting impression. The people, the process, the culture—it all felt right. I felt  AtkinsRéalis was a place where I could truly grow.

Learning never stops

Since joining, I’ve led structural projects across the UK, US, and Middle East. Alongside our lead office and Global Technology Centre teams, we've delivered quality work, tackled site issues, and supported teams with on-ground solutions.

AtkinsRéalis supported me in completing my master’s in Structural Engineering—with distinction. I studied from 4 to 7 AM, while working full time, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the support of my team and family. I'm now pursuing chartership with ICE and trained as an internal auditor, gaining a deeper understanding of how our systems and people power a global business.

Today, I serve as Quality Lead for our Pune office and contribute to its administrative initiatives alongside the Engineering Design team.

Life beyond work

I come from a humble farming family in a small village. Working in the fields as a child taught me resilience.

My wife has been my biggest support, especially while I pursued my degree. We have two wonderful children. My daughter plays basketball, and my son keeps our home lively. I also enjoy movies and participating in office events, which helps me maintain a balanced life—something AtkinsRéalis truly supports.

Ravindra’s journey is just one of many at AtkinsRéalis.
