Why join us?

SNC-Lavalin is one of the largest engineering and construction groups in the world, and a major player in infrastructure ownership, operations, and maintenance services. SNC-Lavalin companies have offices across Canada and in 35 other countries and are currently working in some 100 countries. (www.snclavalin.com)

SNC-Lavalin's Power, Grid & Industrial Solutions Sector is an expert in the fields of power generation and distribution. We are proud to have more than 100 years of experience in the field of dams and hydroelectricity, the company's very first hydroelectric project dating back to 1911. SNC-Lavalin has been closely involved in the design, construction, refurbishment and study of hydro and power systems and has facilitated the production of some 296,000 MW of hydropower, more than 114,000 km of transmission lines and more than 2,500 substations around the world.

Climate change continues to be at the heart of the global environmental agenda and continues to influence decisions and the overall direction of the energy sector. As a result, the group also oversees renewable energy and energy storage projects. Furthermore, as critical infrastructure protection becomes a growing concern for utilities, the group also continues to support the growth of SNC-Lavalin's digital and telecommunications technologies.

We are looking for a Mechanical EIT will work on a variety of hydro projects with a focus on heavy mechanical (gates and cranes) and turbine-generator related work.

Our projects include large and small hydro projects and dam-safety related mandates (spillway gates and hoist machinery) for clients/utilities throughout Canada and the US, as well as some international projects.  The successful candidate will work in the Mechanical team to perform inspections, prepare design calculations, write procurement specifications, work with vendors for equipment supply contracts, and liaise with clients. The successful candidate will mentor and provide technical guidance for junior engineers in our team.

How will you contribute to the team?

To perform this role successfully, the candidate will be responsible for but not limited to the following:

  • Act as Package Engineer (technical lead) working directly with vendors on equipment supply contracts for gates, cranes, and turbine-generator units.
  • Work effectively within a multidisciplinary engineering team, coordinating with civil, electrical, and other mechanical engineers.
  • Perform design analysis and calculations for gates (spillway gates, intake gates, stoplogs, etc.) and other equipment, including:
    • Strength calculations to assess existing / aging gates and hoist equipment.
    • Preliminary sizing of equipment for conceptual designs and to provide input to support civil design.
  • Work with drafting technicians to prepare design drawings and conceptual / tender level drawings for equipment.
  • Perform and/or witness inspections of aging equipment including gates, hoists, cranes and turbine-generator units.
  • Write specifications for refurbishment work and equipment supply contracts for gates, hoists, cranes and turbine-generator units.
  • Prepare design basis memoranda, technical memoranda, and reports, and coordinate report preparation within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Review the work of other engineers, including calculations, drawings, and reports.
  • Participate in risk analysis workshops including dam-safety related risk (PFMA) and internal project risk workshops.
  • Provide presentations to clients and internal audiences including management committees and informal presentations to other engineers and technicians in the SNC-Lavalin hydro team.
  • Travel to project sites may be required occasionally, and opportunities for longer site assignments will occasionally arise if the successful candidate is interested (though it is not required).

What will you contribute?

  • Candidates must be registered or be eligible for registration as a P. Eng. with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC).
  • As a minimum, candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • At least 7 years of experience in the hydroelectric industry, preferably with specific experience in heavy mechanical and turbine-generator units.
  • A thorough understanding of turbine-generator operations, governor systems and hydraulics is an asset.
  • Familiarity with other balance of plant mechanical systems in hydro projects is an asset.
  • Knowledge of ASME, IEC, USACE, WorkSafeBC and other codes, standards, and regulatory requirements relevant to the work.
  • Proficiency in Office software products is essential (Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.).
  • AutoCAD and 3D drafting software experience (SolidWorks, Revit or other) is an asset.
  • Demonstrated experience working in an environment where safety, integrity and teamwork are key values.
  • A clear communicator with ability to make clear presentations to peers, management, and clients.
  • An excellent command of the English language (written and spoken).
  • Proven mentoring, teamwork, and leadership skills.
