Overview
This position, reporting to the Operations Manager, is responsible for the leadership, development, welfare, and performance of a team of Control Room Operators and Communication Controllers.
Your role
- Ensure required staffing levels are always maintained, following standard overtime call out practices.
- Manage annual competency, on the job training, and performance assessments.
- Monitor console time in the Control Room to meet training and/or competency needs; assign duties accordingly.
- Oversee attendance management, flag concerns, and participate in coaching and disciplinary action as needed.
- Encourage a cooperative, safe, and inclusive working culture in the Control Room.
- Deliver on-time train service through adherence to the schedule.
- Safely manage service disruptions while minimizing commercial losses.
- Ensure the delivery of effective passenger information via PA announcements and passenger information displays.
- Monitor and direct emergency response, assume overall command and provide regular updates to the Operations Manager during major events.
- Ensure that alternate service plans are effectively implemented and communicated to both internal and external stakeholders.
- Ensure detailed reports are submitted following major service disruptions.
- Prepare post-incident recaps and participate in investigations.
- Maintain minimum annual competency for self at all workstations.
- Take responsibility for a workstation if staff shortage occurs.
- Assist in the maintenance of SOPs.
- Provide start of shift briefings, including review of planned daily activities.
- Facilitate safe work planning meetings, on day and night shifts.
- Be actively involved in mentoring staff, focus on succession planning.
- Report all equipment and system faults including lifts, escalators, station equipment, radio, and communications equipment.
- Ensure all Safety Critical Staff maintain certification according to a plan.
- Execute plans for special events.
- Provide visitor tours when necessary.
- Liaise with Transit Police and other emergency services.
- Generate work orders when necessary.
- Ensure self and staff are up to date on all critical communications including Operating Bulletins, procedural changes, and notices from enterprise partners.
- Other duties as assigned.
About you
- 5 or more years' experience in a railway or rail-based operation, supervision of a railway or equivalent.
- 5 or more years' experience in a role that had several defined priorities and objectives.
- 5 or more years' experience in a Control Room environment (SCADA/Comms/ERA/Dispatch or equivalent)
- Minimum of high school diploma.
- Possess a strong command of the English language, both written and verbal.
- Excellent written and verbal communications.
- Capable of learning, implementing, and overseeing Canada Line Operating rules and procedures for normal, abnormal, and emergency conditions.
- Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team.
- Ability to understand technical information and relay it in a manner that is clearly understood by others.
- Ability to deal with conflicting priorities in a calm manner, able to articulate their decision-making process.
- Ability to prioritize and implement alternative service plans based on changing conditions; effectively communicate and oversee successful outcome.
- Understand the importance of a no-blame culture and ability to work well in a team environment.
- Experience working in a stressful environment.
- Demonstrate an attention to detail, and a readiness to follow policies and procedures.
- Have an enthusiastic and positive nature.
- Ability to correctly analyze a situation and respond appropriately.
- Ability to lead training in a classroom and on the job.
- Ability to pass a company aptitude test and medical; color perception, visual acuity, hearing and impairment screening.
- The role requires shift work for a continuous 24/7 operation, 365 days per year.
- A combination of education and experience may also be considered.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Good verbal skills and working knowledge of a foreign language that is relevant to the area that the Canada Line operates in.
- Previous exposure to a railway or rail-based operations, supervision of a railway.
- Excellent report writing skills.
- Radio and/or Public Address experience.
- Computer skills –experience with the Microsoft Office Suite.
- Experience working in a regulated environment.
- Knowledge of other transport systems and the railways in the surrounding area.
- Experience working in a control room or scheduling environment.
- Experience working in a safety-critical environment.
- Specific Control Room experience (e.g., SCADA/Comms, ERA environment).
- Experience working shifts.
- Experience as an emergency operator or equivalent
- Expected compensation for this role is between Pay Range $120,000 - $136,000 annually. Base salaries are determined according to several parameters like skills, experience, and potential impact on the role. Internal and external competitiveness are also taken into account in our offers.
