Hello, I’m Caroline, a graduate ecologist at AtkinsRéalis, based in the Cork office within the Infrastructure Ireland team. It’s my first role since leaving university, and what it's really opened my eyes up to is that ecology is not just the ticking of legal boxes and the cataloguing of species, but rather it's about understanding and considering the landscape as a whole when it comes to development.  

I believe that getting to work, or simply meeting friends in a park, should never be difficult, dangerous, or polluting. My work directly addresses these challenges, leading to concrete, positive changes for citizens and their communities.

Our Engineering Net Zero and Sustainability training program allowed me to meet global colleagues face to face. We collaborated closely, identified carbon hotspots and came up with practical solutions. That combination of teamwork and real-world application was a real learning curve for me.

Everyone’s experiences are different, and every contribution matters. The best way forward is not to compare but to learn together.

My job here is pretty different from what I was doing in the UK. Being here has given me chances I probably wouldn't have gotten so quickly back home. Now, I'm part of the digital innovations team, which I was always interested in back in the UK but hadn't landed a job in yet.

Working in renewable energy allows me to contribute directly to tackling climate change and promoting sustainability. I enjoy being a part of that and the energy transition to net zero – I know I'm making a significant impact for our planet and our communities.
