Job Title: Senior Civil/Structural Engineer

If you’re a talented civil/structural Engineer with demolition and decommissioning experience in the nuclear industry, or similar safety critical industry, then we’d love you to apply for this role and join our team.

Our Team:

Our Atkins Reactor Decommissioning team is part of SNC-Lavalin’s Nuclear & Power business.

Our multi-disciplinary team is made up of engineers and scientists who work across engineering, decommissioning and waste management projects. We specializes in taking on the most challenging engineering projects in the nuclear decommissioning sector, covering markets in the UK, Europe and North America.

Our clients are mostly tier 1 site licence companies, utilities and government organisations with aging and non-operational nuclear reactor fleets.

Our projects include design and assessment of ILW and LLW retrieval and processing techniques, packaging of waste for transportation and long-term storage, assessment of existing plant and support to the planning and infrastructure required for decommissioning and site remediation.

The Role:

You’ll be helping us to develop clients decommissioning strategies, and more specifically, their deconstruction and demolition plans. This could include the strategies and techniques to assure the longevity and integrity of existing infrastructure or a phased deconstruction of key plant and structures with a view on future demolition.

Our reputation for excellence is centred on delivering the right engineering solutions to our clients’ problems and you will be expected to help define the problem, identify an appropriate demolition methodology, and justify the right solution.

The relationship with our clients is of critical importance and we expect you to build close ties with the client, founded on trust, delivery and a desire to continually improve the engineering service we provide. The role may also include supporting business development and bidding activities.

You’ll will be required to help grow our technical capability through the development of yourself, mentoring or managing others and striving for the continued improvements in reputation for excellence.

Whilst your office base will be in Bristol, flexibility in work location is important – from time to time our clients do call on our team to deliver work from their sites.

The Person:

We are looking for people who relish in technically challenging engineering projects. You should have the ability to solve complex problems and be able to clearly communicate this solution to others. A strong civil/structural engineering background with decommissioning or demolition experience is essential for our needs.

You will be proactive and have excellent communication and presentation skills. You will also have an appreciation of the commercial aspects of consultancy and design projects, to identify project risks and to ensure mitigations are identified and in place. You get satisfaction from building relationships, with clients and with colleagues.

Staff development and career progression is crucial to our business and we are therefore seeking highly motivated engineers that can help others to develop and achieve their potential.

Skills and behaviors:

  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Performance driven and able to motivate self and teams and create a strong delivery culture.
  • A strong element of client relationship management and people leadership.
  • Willing to work flexibly with occasional out of hours work to accommodate project & client requirements.
  • Demonstrable knowledge and experience:
  • Good demolition experience.
  • Develop demolition strategies for nuclear facilities, or similar high hazard industry.
  • Technical practitioner able to demonstrate sound engineering judgement and with extensive experience in using fundamental engineering skills.
  • Able to produce and review/correct high-quality technical reports.
  • Awareness of own technical limitations and using the help and support of others to deliver.
  • An understanding of the commercial aspects of a consultancy business.
  • Some on-site or hands-on plant experience is desirable but not essential.

We envisage that you will have the following qualifications (or equivalents):

Honours Degree (or equivalent) in civil/structural engineering or related discipline (2:1 minimum).

Chartered Engineer or working towards chartership status.

    About Us:

This is an exciting time for us – we are diversifying our portfolio to become a more global organisation, while also continuing to grow our services in the Nuclear and Power New Build sector in the UK. As part of a larger SNC Lavalin global business, there will be opportunities to develop your skills and experience in the UK working across all our clients and also for international travel.

We support flexible working and equal opportunities as we believe that diverse teams provide the best mix of interpersonal and technical skills needed to exceed our customers’ expectations. Our commitment to staff development is underpinned by numerous stable and long-term framework agreements with key clients.

Atkins recognise that there are many well qualified people who are looking to further their career, but who cannot commit to full time employment. We support flexible working arrangements and are interested to discuss how we can accommodate individual requirements.

This role may require security clearance and offers of employment will be dependent on obtaining the relevant level of clearance.  If this is necessary it will be discussed with you at interview.

If applying to this role please do not make reference to (in conversation) or include in your application or CV,  details of any current or previously held security clearance.

ATKINS, part of the SNC Lavalin Group, is committed to having a diverse and inclusive workforce. As an Equal Opportunities Employer, we value applications from all backgrounds, cultures and ability.
