We are seeking an Industrial Mechanic / Millwright to join our Maintenance Team. The Industrial Mechanic / Millwright is responsible for maintaining all maintenance assets including Rail-borne Equipment (RBE), road vehicles, static and mobile generators, tooling, switch machines, forklifts, Elevated Work Platforms (EWP), wheel lathe, train movers, support equipment and special maintenance equipment.  This role also carries out overhaul and refurbishment of switch machines, pumps, actuators and other guideway components. The Wayside Mechanic is responsible for Maintenance of Way (MOW) housekeeping, tooling inventory, organizing parts and material storage as well as the staging of tools and materials for upcoming projects. The Wayside Mechanic will also recommend spares requirements and stocking levels for maintenance assets.

SAFETY CRITICAL POSITION - This position is safety critical.  Fitness for duty is a requirement of the position.

Location: Richmond, BC (Onsite Work)

Your role within the team:

  • Carries out preventative, corrective and major maintenance on all maintenance assets including rail-borne equipment, road vehicles, generators, tooling, switch machines, forklifts, cranes, elevated work platforms, support equipment, OMC compressor, train movers and special maintenance equipment
  • Responsible for always keeping the fleet of rail-borne equipment in serviceable condition
  • Independently troubleshoots and diagnoses the cause of failures to mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment and rectify them in a timely manner
  • Performs preventative maintenance and diagnoses and repairs issues on Rail Grinder
  • Recommends designs and implements modifications to maintenance assets, including the electrification of the fleet and transition to battery-powered tooling
  • Follows written procedures, engineering drawings and instructions to implement the required maintenance, modification, overhaul and corrective maintenance requirements
  • Develops a full working knowledge of all maintenance assets, learning both through review of manuals and investigating equipment with limited supporting documentation
  • Generates, updates and closes Work Orders in JD Edwards
  • Reviews Daily Activities Sheet (DAS) and JD Edwards to take responsibility for completing preventative and corrective maintenance on RBE, road vehicles, generators, tooling, switch machines, forklifts, cranes, elevated work platforms, support equipment, OMC compressor, train movers and special maintenance equipment
  • Reviews entries made in equipment logbooks and carries out corrective actions.
  • Liaisons with equipment operators to understand reported faults and carry out corrective actions.
  • Sources parts, materials and consumables while providing recommendations on stock quantities
  • Operates all rail-borne equipment, including the Rail Grinder.
  • Assists with development and training of rail-borne equipment rescue and recovery procedures
  • Provides technical input when onboarding equipment, including evaluating compatibility with Canada Line trackwork
  • Inspects and assesses new equipment, including purchased, rented and third-party assets
  • Overhauls, refurbishes and repairs switch machines and other guideway components
  • Assist with maintenance and repairs of wheel lathe equipment
  • Maintains MOW organization and cleanliness, including tooling and materials inventory
  • Organizes parts, tooling and materials for upcoming work
  • Assists with picking stock, arranging and organizing storage of inventory and maintaining accurate inventory levels
  • Leads and escorts contractor work
  • Provides a handover to Supervisors at end of each shift
  • Other related duties as assigned

Safety Responsibilities –

  • Adherence to all statutory and InTransit Operations workshop and trackside regulations and procedures, including impairment and hours of work policies
  • Adherence to all AtkinsRéalis policies, procedures and values
  • Ensure that all maintenance activities will be carried out and documented in a method that will not cause harm to themselves, other staff or the public
  • Ensure that all tools used are correct for the maintenance action and are free from defect
  • Ensure that all testing and measuring equipment is calibrated and within date
  • Ensure all licenses are current and valid for equipment to be operated
  • Attend required safety related training
  • Participate in regular safety meetings

  • Proper handling and disposal of all chemicals and items deemed to be surplus

  • Expected compensation for this role is $43.95 per hour for training rate, then $51.07 per hour for fully qualified rate.

The ideal candidate:  

  • Red Seal ITA BC in Industrial Mechanic (Millwright), Heavy Duty Equipment Technician or Truck and Transport Mechanic
  • Minimum of 5 years as a journeymen mechanic with relevant experience in a maintenance/ workshop environment
  • Minimum of one year working with complex hydraulic systems
  • Experience working on diesel engines is an asset
  • Previous experience with ALRT vehicles or in a heavy industrial environment will also be considered
  • Must possess strong communication skills; ability to work well with others in a team environment
  • Must be well motivated and have an aptitude for mechanical, electrical, pneumatic and electronic systems
  • A combination of education and experience may also be considered

Required –

  • This role will be based on a fixed dayshift Monday-Friday 8-hour workday but must have ability to shift schedule and work nights, weekends and holidays if required
  • Required to give clear and concise reports both written and orally
  • Valid class 5 BC driver’s license
  • High School Graduation (grade 12)
