The Lead Software Engineer is responsible for contributing to the design, development, deployment, and operation of secure, scalable, and reliable software solutions.

The role provides technical leadership within an assigned product area or project, contributes to architectural and design decisions, and ensures that solutions comply with organizational engineering, quality, security, and operational standards.

The role is expected to lead complex projects, coordinate technical delivery across participating teams, mentor software engineers, and act as a key technical contact for project stakeholders.

Your role

  • Lead the technical delivery of complex projects.
  • Contribute to technical planning, estimation, scheduling, dependency identification, and delivery tracking.
  • Break technical solutions into implementable work packages and engineering tasks.
  • Allocate or delegate technical activities within the team when appropriate.
  • Monitor technical progress against agreed project objectives, quality expectations, milestones, and timelines.
  • Identify technical risks, constraints, assumptions, and dependencies.
  • Recommend practical mitigation and contingency measures.
  • Coordinate technical activities across development, QA, DevOps, architecture, security, infrastructure, and business teams.
  • Ensure that technical deliverables satisfy the agreed acceptance criteria and non-functional requirements.
  • Escalate issues that may affect project scope, cost, quality, schedule, security, or architecture.
  • Support release readiness assessments and production deployment decisions.
  • Provide clear and timely progress updates to project and product stakeholders.
  • Communicate clearly, calmly, and effectively during challenging situations, production incidents, delivery delays, or periods of increased project risk.
  • Provide stakeholders with timely and transparent information about delivery risks, technical constraints, potential impacts, mitigation actions, and recovery plans.
  • Facilitate constructive discussions with technical and business stakeholders to support timely decision-making during critical situations.
  • Strong presentation and demonstration skills, with the ability to communicate solution capabilities effectively to clients and stakeholders.
  • Provide day-to-day technical guidance to software engineers.
  • Mentor junior and mid-level team members and support the development of their technical capabilities.
  • Lead code reviews, design reviews, technical discussions, and engineering problem-solving sessions.
  • Delegate suitable technical activities and monitor their completion.
  • Encourage team members to apply coding, security, testing, documentation, and DevOps standards.
  • Promote knowledge sharing, collaborative problem-solving, and continuous learning.
  • Provide constructive feedback and identify development opportunities for team members.
  • Facilitate collaboration among team members and other participating technical teams.
  • Act as a technical escalation point within the assigned scope.
  • Apply quality assurance practices throughout design, implementation, testing, deployment, and maintenance.
  • Define and enforce appropriate unit, integration, contract, API, security, performance, and regression testing expectations.
  • Collaborate with QA engineers to develop test strategies and ensure adequate technical test coverage.
  • Review code quality, test results, security findings, and release evidence.
  • Ensure that defects are appropriately prioritized, investigated, resolved, and prevented from recurring.
  • Conduct technical reviews to verify compliance with coding, architecture, security, and operational standards.
  • Promote automation of repetitive testing and quality-control activities.
  • Lead technical design activities for an assigned product, application, service, or project area.
  • Contribute to architectural decisions in collaboration with solution architects, enterprise architects, security specialists, and other technical stakeholders.
  • Translate functional and non-functional requirements into appropriate technical designs.
  • Design scalable, maintainable, resilient, and secure software solutions.
  • Design event-driven and microservices-based architectures where appropriate.
  • Define service boundaries, integration patterns, data flows, and communication mechanisms.
  • Apply API gateway patterns for routing, authentication, authorization, throttling, monitoring, and service abstraction.
  • Evaluate technical options and document architectural decisions, assumptions, constraints, and trade-offs.
  • Ensure that technical designs are aligned with organizational standards and the approved architecture.
  • Develop and maintain accurate technical documentation like Architecture and integration diagrams, Software development Plan, API specs etc.
  • Ensure documentation is maintained throughout the product and project lifecycle.
  • Communicate technical information effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Contribute directly to the implementation of complex and business-critical software components.
  • Apply specialist technical knowledge to investigate and resolve complex engineering problems.
  • Develop high-quality, secure, testable, maintainable, and reusable code.
  • Establish coding practices and ensure that agreed engineering standards are consistently followed.
  • Lead code reviews and provide constructive technical feedback to team members.
  • Identify and address technical debt within the agreed product or project scope.
  • Promote the use of suitable design patterns, reusable components, and engineering practices.
  • Conduct proof-of-concept implementations when required to validate technical approaches.
  • Support the integration of software components with internal systems, third-party services, and cloud platforms.
  • Define and implement the CI/CD approach for the assigned product or project area.
  • Establish appropriate build, test, security scanning, approval, release, and deployment stages.
  • Implement gated release processes and configure appropriate deployment approvals.
  • Define and maintain development, testing, staging, pre-production, and production deployment workflows.
  • Implement automated quality checks within CI/CD pipelines.
  • Define rollback, recovery, and release validation procedures.
  • Monitor pipeline reliability and recommend improvements to release efficiency and deployment quality.
  • Work with operations, platform, security, and infrastructure teams to resolve deployment-related issues.
  • Cloud Infrastructure and Infrastructure as Code:
  • Design and provision Azure resources using Infrastructure as Code.
  • Develop and maintain reusable Bicep or Terraform templates and modules.
  • Apply source control, peer review, testing, and versioning practices to infrastructure code.
  • Ensure consistency across environments through automated infrastructure provisioning.
  • Apply appropriate Azure identity, networking, security, monitoring, and resource management practices.
  • Support configuration management and secure handling of application secrets.
  • Ensure that cloud resources follow organizational naming, tagging, access control, governance, and cost-management standards.
  • Security, Privacy, and Compliance:
  • Incorporate security requirements throughout the software development lifecycle.
  • Apply privacy-by-design and security-by-design principles to technical solutions.
  • Ensure appropriate application of authentication, authorization, encryption, secrets management, logging, and audit controls.
  • Integrate static analysis, dependency scanning, container scanning, and other security checks into engineering workflows.
  • Ensure adherence to organizational security policies, development standards, and applicable industry or regulatory requirements.
  • Track security findings and coordinate their timely remediation.
  • Performance, Reliability, and Operational Support:
  • Define and implement performance, scalability, availability, and reliability requirements.
  • Analyse application behaviour, service dependencies, latency, throughput, resource utilization, and potential bottlenecks.
  • Assess system performance and capacity and recommend appropriate improvements.
  • Implement suitable caching, asynchronous processing, database optimization, connection management, and scaling strategies.
  • Define appropriate monitoring, logging, tracing, alerting, and health-check requirements.
  • Contribute to the establishment of service-level indicators and operational thresholds.
  • Lead the technical investigation of complex incidents and recurring problems within the assigned product or project.
  • Continuous Improvement and Technology Evaluation:
  • Identify opportunities to reduce technical debt, improve performance, and streamline delivery; contribute to backlog grooming.
  • Experience using approved AI-assisted development tools for coding, code analysis, documentation, testing, troubleshooting, and engineering productivity.
  • Understanding of the security, privacy, compliance, confidentiality, and intellectual property considerations associated with AI-assisted engineering.
  • Ability to identify appropriate AI use cases without compromising engineering quality or accountability.

About you

  • 8-10 or more years of software engineering experience, including experience delivering production-grade applications.
  • Demonstrated experience providing technical leadership within a software development team.
  • Experience leading the technical delivery of small to medium-sized projects or well-defined workstreams within larger programs.
  • Hands-on experience with Azure, CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code, containers, APIs, and distributed-system design.
  • Experience supporting production applications and resolving complex technical incidents.
  • Experience mentoring engineers and leading code or design reviews.
  • Relevant Azure, DevOps, security, or architecture certifications would be desirable but not mandatory.
  • Solid experience building full-stack solutions with C#, .NET/.NET Core, ASP.NET MVC/Web API, SQL Server, and at least one modern front-end framework (React/Angular/Blazor).
  • Hands-on experience using Entity Framework or Entity Framework Core for object-relational mapping and application data access. Experience with entity modelling, relationships, migrations, change tracking, query optimization,
  • Hands-on experience using Dapper for lightweight and performance-sensitive data-access requirements.
  • Ability to select appropriately between Entity Framework, Dapper, stored procedures, and other data-access approaches based on solution requirements.
  • Strong knowledge of SQL, relational-data modelling, query optimization, transactions, concurrency, and database-performance considerations.
  • Experience implementing repository, unit-of-work, specification, or other suitable data-access patterns where appropriate.
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve application and database performance issues, including inefficient queries and excessive data-access operations.
  • Understanding of secure data-access practices, including parameterized queries, least-privilege access, secure connection management, and protection against injection attacks.
  • Solid experience in Authentication/Authorization (preferably Azure AD), Secure coding practices (input validation, secrets management) and Logging (Serilog, ILogger).
  • Solid Experience working in Agile environments, using Azure DevOps (Boards, Repos, Pipelines) or equivalent tools for work tracking, source control, DevOps Pipelines and CI/CD.
  • Solid experience working with Microsoft Azure Cloud (App Service, Functions, Azure SQL, Key Vault, Entra ID, etc) in real projects, including operational troubleshooting.
  • Hands-on Experience integrating APIs (REST) and handling security concerns (OAuth2/OIDC, tokens, scopes, roles).
  • Good experience with Infrastructure as Code; ability to read and make incremental changes to Bicep/ARM/Terraform with guidance (optional but valuable).
  • Languages: C#, JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML, CSS, PowerShell (basic), Python (basic). SQL Server basics: CRUD, indexes, stored procedures.
  • Frameworks/Services: .NET/.NET Core, ASP.NET MVC, Web API, REST; experience in WCF/SOAP beneficial.
  • Front-End: React or Angular (components, state management, routing), Blazor (beneficial).
  • Cloud & DevOps: Azure App Service, Azure Functions, Azure SQL, Azure Key Vault; Azure DevOps (Repos, Pipelines), Git.
  • Security & Identity: Azure AD (Entra ID), OAuth2, OIDC; understanding of roles/claims, secure secret handling.
  • Architecture Patterns: MVC, layered architecture, microservices (conceptual understanding), SOLID, dependency injection.
  • Testing & Quality (Good to Have): Unit testing (xUnit/NUnit/MSTest), mocking frameworks (good to have); awareness of SAST/DAST, OWASP Top 10; basic performance profiling; Awareness of integra.
