AtkinsRéalis Canada Inc. is seeking a Junior Bituminous Laboratory Technician to join Materials Laboratory Team in our Vaughan, Ontario location.

Junior Bituminous Laboratory Technician position is designed for candidates pursuing a degree in a Civil, Materials, Geotechnical field and provides opportunities to learn what it’s like to work in a professional environment and apply what’s learned in class to the real-world challenges we face every day.

Location – Vaughan, ON

Your role within the team:

  • Position requires knowledge of established testing procedures (e.g. MTO Laboratory Testing manual, CSA, ASTM, AASHTO) and laboratory protocols, and of the scientific principles and practices applicable to test protocols, procedures, methods and analytical system, in order to set up and operate equipment and conduct testing on asphalt cement and emulsion materials and related products, to produce accurate and valid test results (e.g. to ensure that engineering materials and related products used in MTO construction contracts have met established criteria such as specification requirements).
  • Assisting in preparation and monitoring of highly advanced asphalt cement testing programs.
  • Documentation of laboratory activities and subsequent test results.
  • Field sampling of asphalt products.
  • Possibility of travel to various work sites across Ontario to assist with field sampling (Ministry of Transportation Ontario Superpave Correlation Sampling, etc.).
  • General activities related to the daily functioning of the laboratory facility (calibration of equipment, housekeeping, communication with staff from other AtkinsRéalis offices, sample storage, etc.).
  • Job requires knowledge of the operation, capabilities and limitations of automated and manual testing equipment for the materials under test, to troubleshoot procedures and equipment and to operate and maintain it safely, to avoid injury and damage to equipment. Enthusiastic participation in health and safety programs.

The ideal candidate:

  • Some experience in asphalt cement and emulsions laboratory testing is required.
  • Civil, Materials, Geotechnical Collage technician degree diploma from a Canada / Ontario accredited program is required.
  • Job requires technical skills to carry out test procedures accurately and consistently (e.g. standard tests on asphalt cement and emulsions, Extended BBR testing) and assist in the reporting of laboratory testing results.
  • Job requires analytical skills to interpret test results.
  • Job requires diagnostic and evaluation skills to assess impact of results when comparing expected versus actual outcomes (e.g. failure of QA samples); response may require resampling, retesting, calculation verification.
  • Job requires written communication skills to record test results accurately and present test results and related information in understandable technical and descriptive formats e.g. test reports, graphs.
  • Professional Registrations:
    • Willing to gain work experience as required to apply for the Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists designation in the Province of Ontario.
