Net Zero Energy – Power Grids
Locations within this team: Birmingham, Epsom, Glasgow.
Our team is looking for graduates with an understanding of electrical engineering, power systems, and energy markets. You should be keen on developing your knowledge in the field and have an interest in the energy sector, with particular focus on the route to Net Zero. Previous relevant industry experience is encouraged however not essential.
In this role, you will find yourself working on projects in the power sector, across two key areas: Regulatory & Advisory, and Transmission & Distribution. There are also opportunities to support projects across the wider Net Zero and AtkinsRéalis businesses.
Some of our clients are National Grid and Ofgem, and we also work with a variety of organisations both in the UK and internationally. You will gain experience delivering multi-disciplinary projects related to research and analysis (such as feasibility studies) and technical and modelling (such as Front-End Engineering Design). In addition, there is plenty of opportunity to get involved in project management and bidding. Secondment opportunities are available, offering varied experience both internally and for clients.

Net Zero Energy – Electrical, Control and Instrumentation (EC&I)
Locations within this team: Glasgow
As part of the EC&I team based in Glasgow, you will find yourself working within the power sector, with a key focus on the UK's journey to Net Zero.
You will develop a range of skills with the opportunity to work on feasibility studies and design cycles (from functional to detailed design), alongside site-based work. You will have the opportunity to work with key players in the power industry.
You will find yourself working on projects in the nuclear and power sectors which could include design and verification for hydrogen generation / storage / distribution, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), Control and Safety systems, specification and selection of EC&I equipment, supporting regulators, voltage design, advisory services, and technical due diligence. You will gain experience working alongside our other disciplines including mechanical, process, civil, and process safety engineers in addition to our project management community.

Reactor Operations and Decommissioning

Please note whilst most of our graduate roles start in September 2025 the Reactor Operations and Decommissioning team (in Bristol only) is open to candidates starting sooner if you have already graduated from university.
In RO&D, we utilise collaborative working between our offices, and clients can engage with our engineers around the country. EC&I graduates are encouraged to apply for a location of their preference, but are advised that project work in Bristol typically has a C&I Engineering bias, whereas project work in Glasgow typically has an Electrical Engineering bias.

As a Graduate Electrical, Control & Instrumentation (EC&I) Engineer within Reactor Operations and Decommissioning, you will join a growing and vibrant team and find yourself immersed in a diverse portfolio of work covering the entire nuclear lifecycle in both the civil nuclear sector and UK defence industry. With the knowledge and skills that you’ve gained throughout your studies, you’ll be ready to start this exciting next chapter within a diverse team of highly skilled engineers. As part of our team, you will be empowered to gain broad experience across our portfolio of work with key clients such as EDF, Magnox and Rolls-Royce.
You can expect to gain experience in a variety of working environments, including being based in our AtkinsRéalis offices around the UK, as well as gaining valuable site-based experience supporting our clients on their operating sites at the forefront of carbon neutral electricity generation. Day-to-day, you should expect to work on the specification, design, development, and implementation of EC&I systems. This could include electrical and control panels, electrical layout, cabling routing, and substantiation of critical safety-related systems. You’ll also identify customer requirements, produce specifications, hazard assessment, support project management activities, and collaborate with clients as well as your AtkinsRéalis colleagues and our supply chain partners. All of this adds up to an outstanding environment to gain varied experience that will aid you with your professional development and progress towards professional registration.

Power New Build
Locations within this team: Epsom, Bristol.
You will join a growing and vibrant Electrical, Control and Instrumentation (EC&I) team, taking on the role of consultant to key nuclear clients through design, build and operation of the next generation of nuclear reactors. Joining our team, you will have the opportunity to work on numerous exciting projects, including helping us design the first nuclear power stations to be built in the UK for 25 years, helping the UK achieve its greenhouse emissions Net Zero target. We support our clients remotely, and many opportunities are available to deliver work from their offices and, potentially, power stations.
The team is looking for graduates with a good understanding of the broad base of electrical engineering, electronics, instrumentation, and control systems. You should be keen on developing your knowledge in the field and have an interest in the nuclear energy sector.
Under the careful guidance of our experienced engineers, you will work on the specification, design, development, and implementation of EC&I systems (including electrical and control panels, electrical layout, cabling routing, etc.), and substantiation of critical safety-related systems. You can also expect to work on large, complex projects as part of multi-disciplinary teams alongside civil, mechanical and process engineers, and deliver your work in innovative ways with focus on digital technologies.
Decommissioning and Waste Services
Locations within this team: Whitehaven (West Cumbria), Manchester
Based in our Westlakes office on the edge of the stunning Lake District, our team supports clients within the Nuclear industry to deliver innovative solutions in a challenging environment. You will be part of our fast- evolving EC&I team who strive towards using cutting edge technology in a diverse range of projects. Recent projects have incorporated the design, specification, integration and substantiation of all three aspects of EC&I engineering.
As a graduate within the team, you’ll have the chance to get involved with activities including (but not limited to):
- Helping provide solutions to a range of technical issues relating to waste management including developing technical solutions to waste engineering problems.
- Supporting clients within their sites and offices – this may require travel to different sites away from your local office.
- Supporting onsite decommissioning activities including AtkinsRéalis and client led projects.
The ideal candidate will have a keen interest in the nuclear sector and is passionate about incorporating digital design into their work.
