Mechanical Engineering Graduate Scheme - Transportation

By combining traditional engineering and new innovative technologies, our teams make journeys easier, safer, and more reliable while supporting a greener and more productive society. Our work spans the full transport ecosystem, across Bridges & Civil, Highways, Rail, Central Rail Systems Alliance, and local transport. You'll feel a sense of pride working with our clients such as Highways England, Network Rail and Transport for London to name a few.

Requirements: Minimum 2.2 Bachelors/BEng degree or 2.2 Masters/MEng in Mechanical Engineering

Locations: Birmingham, Crewe, Derby, Doncaster, Manchester, Swindon

The Central Rail Systems Alliance is formed by partners Network Rail, Balfour Beatty, AtkinsRéalis and TSO. Together they are responsible for the delivery of multi-disciplinary railway upgrade projects on the North West & Central, and Eastern regions of Network Rail’s recently devolved routes.

The programme of works delivered by the teams is valued at £2bn and manages the development, design and delivery of Switches and Crossings and Plain Line renewals as its core business but is also responsible for the delivery of major enhancement projects.

With a desire to collaborate with construction partners to produce railway designs for the railway system, you’ll develop as a well-rounded engineer or project manager and gain a fast track to chartership.

Locations: Swindon

Our Railway OLE Design teams provide designs from initial concept and early feasibility, including consultancy-based advice for Rail Electrification related project work and detailed designs and management for the implementation of Overhead Line Electrification while providing on-site construction expertise and support.

You’ll be a part of a team of experts in undertaking and developing layouts plans and details for electrifying new railway corridors; helping to provide design solutions for the structural and mechanical aspects of 25kV AC and DC railway electrification. This will involve mechanical design work, performing structural calculations, specifying the associated equipment, provision of electrification of our existing network, technical studies to develop cost saving ways to implement electrification and heavy, metro/light rail and tramway electrification.

Our portfolio of projects includes a broad range of high-profile clients, including Network Rail, Transport Scotland, Transport for Wales, HS2 and Irish Rail. We also work on a number of international projects supporting overseas railway infrastructure and metro projects.

All of this creates an interesting and varied pipeline of works that allows our graduates to develop quickly, backed by a well-established and strong technical network to support professional development and industry accreditation through chartership with professional institutions such as the IMechE.
