Requirements: Achieved or on track to achieve a minimum of a 2:2 Bachelors/BEng degree or Masters/MEng degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Software and Systems Engineering, Communications Systems Engineering or Mechanical Engineering. Other equivalent STEM degree qualifications including Physics or Mathematics are also considered.

Locations: Birmingham, Epsom and Manchester.

About our team and projects: Our Highways Technology team design and deliver technology infrastructure and systems to improve the safety and efficiency of the highway and road tunnels network in the UK and other locations globally. Our designs incorporate a range of technologies including digital CCTV, radar, LED signs & signals, electronic detection systems, tunnel safety systems and both fixed & wireless telecommunications networks to monitor and manage traffic. We use digital tools for equipment placement, optimising cable routes and producing power designs.

At AtkinsRéalis we’re involved in a range of projects from leading-edge intelligent mobility initiatives such as the M4 Smart Motorways scheme to schemes such as the provision of state of the art communications and remote monitoring systems in Heathrow Airport’s cargo tunnel, vital for the efficient movement of freight around the UKs busiest airport.

Our expertise is applied during all stages of a project lifecycle, from initial conception through to detailed design, construction, commissioning, and handover. We make extensive use of Building Information Modelling (BIM) which enables 3D models to be created by our engineering teams. We encourage innovation to ensure systems are designed, delivered, and commissioned to exacting client standards. We also provide on-site expertise for construction and commissioning activities along with safety critical inspections.

We showcase this expertise on all projects we deliver. One in particular – the A14 Cambridge to Huntingdon Upgrade – involved the design and upgrade of over 21 miles of new and existing highways. Our practice produced the design for the signs, signals, vehicle detection systems, traffic counting and classification, CCTV, roadside telephony, and communications networks. Our graduates were instrumental in the undertaking of this design work and were provided the opportunity to work on-site during the construction phase of this high-profile scheme.

Your role: As a Graduate Engineer in AtkinsRéalis Highways Technology team you will work within our design teams, producing designs, supporting calculations, preparing technical reports, specifications and other documentation across a wide range of high-profile highway and road tunnel infrastructure projects. You will also be given opportunities to support our construction partners implementing our solutions on site ensuring our design solutions can be deployed successfully. By joining our graduate scheme, you will become part of our community of Graduate Engineers at various stages of the development programme. Together you will complete training courses, meet-up for shared learning days and exciting social events.

Our graduate scheme provides a variety of experience including technical, management, commercial and leadership to enable a fulfilling career with AtkinsRéalis. The scheme will enable successful candidates to develop towards chartership with a relevant institution such as the IET providing you with a mentor to help you understand and complete the requirements every step of the way.

About our team and projects: AtkinsRéalis are one of the UK’s leading organizations delivering enhancements and renewals of the Command-and-Control systems that ensure the safe and efficient operation of the UK’s railway infrastructure and passenger/freight services. This includes implementing changes to signalling systems made up of trackside electronic & electrical control equipment (e.g. signals, power supplies, track switch machines, level crossings, telephones), modern electronic signal box control systems and the vital telecommunications networks connecting it all together.

We support high profile industry clients such as Network Rail, Transport for London, Transport for Wales, Transport for Scotland, Translink (in Northern Ireland), EDF, and High Speed 2 Ltd throughout the full lifecycle of project delivery from initial feasibility studies through to design, installation, testing and commissioning of the signalling systems into operation. This includes project management and whole-life asset support services. Our work directly influences the lives of people across the UK and overseas by improving their passenger experience, making their journeys better and making our world a greener place to live.

Your role: As a Graduate Engineer in AtkinsRéalis Rail Signalling & Telecommunications team you will develop through a fast-tracked scheme consisting of rotational placements around the business with opportunities available in both the UK and overseas. You will have the opportunity to work with our Design, Engineering Management, Project Management, Construction and Testing disciplines across a wide and diverse range of high-profile UK railway infrastructure projects. You will play a key role in pioneering innovative initiatives across the business including the development and application of digital technologies to our delivery processes and supporting the business to achieve its Net Zero Carbon targets. By joining our graduate scheme, you will become part of our community of Graduate Engineers at various stages of the development programme. Together you will complete training courses, meet-up for shared learning days and exciting social events.

Our graduate scheme is designed to place you in charge of your own development. No two graduate experiences will be the same as we encourage you to seek out experiences and opportunities that align with your interests and professional development aspirations including chartership with an appropriate institution such as the IET or the IRSE. You will be empowered at every step of your journey by a well-established support network to maximise your potential and become our future leaders and technical experts.
