Waste Management Graduate Scheme - Nuclear & Power

The nuclear industry has a major role to play in supporting the UK’s energy security, and in contributing to net zero targets essential to combating climate change and ensuring a sustainable and clean energy future.

With the UK government’s commitment to Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technologies and nuclear fusion, the nuclear landscape is continuously adapting to meet our net zero targets. Further, as the UK's current fleet of nuclear reactors move towards their end of life, there are exciting opportunities for managing the decommissioning of the plants, reactor dismantling and dealing with legacy wastes to contribute to protecting the environment and public health. This brings unique challenges in delivering the next generation of nuclear technology whilst simultaneously managing the existing nuclear reactor fleet through to the end of generation and safely decommissioning legacy facilities.

It’s an exciting time to be a part of our Nuclear & Power team, with decades of nationally and internationally critical projects in the pipeline. For you, this is an extraordinary opportunity to contribute to a critical mission whilst developing a rewarding career at the forefront of nuclear science and innovation.

In joining our Nuclear & Power business, you’ll be part of one of two key teams in the UK:

  • Decommissioning & Waste Services.
  • Power New Build.

Requirements: Minimum 2.2 Bachelor’s/BSc/BEng degree in a relevant STEM area.

This may include degrees in Physics, Chemistry, Nuclear Science, Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Decommissioning and Waste Management, Environmental Science, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Pollution, Environmental Control, Radiation & Environmental Protection, Geology, Geoscience, or Geography.

Locations for this business will include: Whitehaven (West Cumbria), Manchester, Bristol, Glasgow, Epsom
(Please note locations may close due to volume of applications - if you're preferred location isn't available when you go to apply please select an alternative.)

Heading

Locations within this team: Whitehaven (West Cumbria), Manchester.

Our team is made up of four key areas: Waste Management and Characterisation, Radiological Protection, Environmental Services and On-site Support.

As a graduate within the team, you’ll have the chance to get involved with activities including (but not limited to):

  • Helping provide solutions to a range of technical issues relating to waste management including developing technical solutions to waste engineering problems.
  • Producing a range of technical documentation including environmental assessments, waste management documentation and radiological protection documentation.
  • Supporting activities to ensure clients meet their permitting and legislation requirements within the highly regulated, high hazard nuclear industry.
  • Supporting clients within their sites and offices – this may require travel to different sites away from your local office.
  • Supporting onsite decommissioning activities including AtkinsRéalis and client led projects.

Locations within this team: Bristol, Manchester, Glasgow, Epsom.

The Environment, Waste & Radiological Services capability is defined by our diverse technical expertise in a wide range of scientific topics within the nuclear industry. Our capability combines the collective experience in radioactive waste management, radiological assessment and environmental studies, offering demand-driven expertise to provide complete and holistic solutions for our clients. The work we do spans the entire nuclear lifecycle, defence and fusion for clients such as EDF Energy, Rolls-Royce (RR), RR SMR, Nuclear Waste Services (NWS), Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA), Nuclear Restoration Services (NRS) and defence and international clients.

As part of the Environment, Waste and Radiological Services team, you will be involved in a variety of exciting projects spanning nuclear waste management, radiological analysis and modelling, and environmental studies. You will have the opportunity to support our clients in developing SMRs, advanced nuclear technologies, nuclear fusion, and large scale conventional nuclear sites. You will also play an instrumental role in ensuring the safe and efficient management of nuclear waste, protecting the environment, and driving innovation in the industry through development of radioactive waste strategy, decommissioning solutions and deep geological disposal facilities (GDF).

By joining our team, you will have the opportunity to gain skills across all of our technical disciplines, spanning the areas of radioactive waste management, radiological assessment and environmental studies. Our graduate scheme offers the opportunity to experience the full breadth of the technical capability that we offer to our clients and develop complementary skillsets that will strengthen your overall technical offering as you grow within AtkinsRéalis. However, if you’re particularly interested in specialising in any of the areas outlined above, be sure to include this preference within your application and we will look to align our opportunities to suit your interests.

We are looking for candidates to join our capability who have a genuine passion for the nuclear industry and a desire to drive their own career, with strong analytical and problem-solving skills, a passion for sustainability, and a desire to make a difference. From day one you will work with our subject matter experts, developing the technical, commercial, and hands-on experience you will need to achieve chartered status and actively contribute to the goal of net zero through development and delivery of a diverse range of nuclear projects.

Our team works predominantly across our office locations in Bristol, Manchester, Glasgow, and Epsom, with staff working flexibly between their home and office locations. As a valued member of our team, you will have the opportunity to visit client offices and gain valuable site-based experience supporting our clients in designing, constructing, operating, and decommissioning UK nuclear sites.

As well as delivering excellence for our clients, we are committed to maintaining an inclusive and supportive environment that allows our people to thrive. Joining us at AtkinsRéalis could be the first step on your path to a long and fulfilling career full of exciting opportunities to grow and develop. We look forward to meeting you and welcoming you into our team!
