This position is available as either full-time and part-time and can be based in any of our office locations. Our largest team presences are in: Birmingham, Bristol, Derby, Edinburgh, Epsom, Glasgow, Manchester, Oxford, Peterborough and Swansea.– however we have offices in many other locations across the UK where you could be based.

Do you have the ambition, enthusiasm and technical capability to work with us as an Associate Director within the Water Resources Planning sector? We are looking for someone to take a leadership role in our water resources modelling team within our incredibly successful water management consultancy business.  This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced candidate looking to progress their career in a fast paced and exciting industry.  Our highly respected Water Management Consultancy team has been at the forefront of new developments for the latest Water Resource Management Planning cycle and is applying new tools, such as Pywr, that are revolutionizing how the industry plans resilient and sustainable water supplies for the future. We are building on this success to grow our team and continue to deliver a wide range of exciting, high-profile projects for water companies and regional water resource groups. You will be responsible for taking a lead role, growing our business through both winning and delivering work across our extensive client portfolio, and in so doing, enhancing our reputation for technical excellence.

As a highly experienced water resources modelling specialist, you will have extensive experience managing technical teams to deliver high-profile projects across the UK and / or internationally. As a Water Quality Modelling Specialist, you’ll play a pivotal role in shaping our water management solutions. Collaborating with a friendly and accomplished team, you’ll contribute to projects that safeguard our environment, enhancing water quality. This is an exciting opportunity to make a difference in an industry that’s evolving rapidly.

Recent projects delivered by our water resources team include regional models, optimizing control curves, investment modelling and developing new approaches to drought, water resource and long-term delivery strategies.  You will join a team of nearly 200 water management specialists, supporting our clients in making the right strategic investment decisions for critical infrastructure, in changing futures and climates, in areas as diverse as water resources, natural capital, mature-base solutions, flood management, green infrastructure, energy and transportation. We work for clients across the UK, including central government, regulators, the water industry, NGOs, and local authorities. Beyond the UK, we play an important role in supporting major international development banks and private clients in driving forwards sustainable water management solutions for irrigation, potable water supply and wider infrastructure schemes.

Responsibilities:

  • You will be joining an established and successful team, working with our water resources Technical Authority in winning, delivering and managing our portfolio of water resources projects. You will champion high standards of performance, and influence project development.
  • As a recognized expert in the field, you will undertake your own work to an excellent standard, and review the work of others, leading on projects and frameworks as appropriate.
  • You will work closely with our clients to develop trusted relationships, supporting them in a confident, professional manner.
  • You will lead on bid preparation and develop new areas of business for the team.
  • As an Associate Director you will be a well-recognized specialist, leading complex projects in your areas of expertise, mentoring and supporting more junior staff, and will be expected to work closely with the team to further develop the group’s objectives, portfolio of projects and clients, and digital tools.
  • The individual with a degree or higher in an engineering, environmental or science subject, you are likely to be chartered or have achieved Fellow status through CIWEM or another relevant professional body.
  • You will be recognized as a leading figure across the industry amongst water companies and regulators with experience of leadership within multidisciplinary teams. As such, you will have comprehensive knowledge in all aspects of water resources modelling, including delivery of key inputs of Statutory Plans such as drought plans and Water Resource Management Plans (WRMP), experience in operational planning, and in supporting companies with drought permit / order applications.
  • Your wider experience will include components of the WRMP, such as calculating various components of the supply-demand balance, demand forecasting, options appraisal, uncertainty and risk (e.g. headroom and outage), and investment modelling.
  • You will be able to demonstrate wide-ranging expertise applying approaches and using industry-wide models, including Aquator, Miser or Pywr water resource models. As an increasing proportion of our work is undertaken in Python or R programming packages, an ability to work within these programming environments is desirable.
  • Similarly, an ability to develop new and innovative approaches is encouraged, to help us continue to develop our digital tools.
  • As an Associate Director you will primarily be acting as a Technical Lead for a team of specialist modellers, supporting them to define and deliver outputs for a range of water resource projects. However, the role will also require elements of hands-on technical delivery for complex problem solving and detailed review.
  • You will be highly motivated and proactive, with a confident and professional manner.
  • You will have excellent numerical, analytical, report-writing and presentational skills and be able to demonstrate delivery of exceptional technical work within the water sector.
  • Your outstanding interpersonal skills and an ability to communicate effectively at all levels will suit collaborative working and the building of high-quality client relationships.
