AtkinsRéalis Canada Inc. is seeking an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) to join Materials Laboratory Team in our Vaughan, Ontario location.

Engineer-in-Training (EIT) position is designed for candidates that are Civil / Geological / Materials Engineering graduated and provides opportunities to learn what it’s like to work in a professional environment and apply what’s learned in class to the real-world challenges we face every day. AtkinsRéalis seeking a full-time entry level engineer to assist senior engineers and project managers with engineering and design duties. This position offers an excellent opportunity for professional growth as it exposes the candidate to material testing, materials design, inspection & project management as well as other aspects of civil / geotechnical/ materials engineering.

Location – Vaughan, ON

Your role within the team:

  • Assist senior civil engineering and laboratory engineering staff with executive planning,
  • organizing, estimating scheduling and monitoring of engineering work activities in the laboratory.
  • Assist in performing mechanical, thermal, chemical, and structural testing of construction materials (e.g., asphalt, aggregates, concrete, soil, asphalt cement, asphalt emulsions, geotechnical rock testing, etc.).
  • Position requires knowledge of established testing procedures (e.g. MTO Laboratory Testing manual, CSA, ASTM, AASHTO) and laboratory protocols, and of the scientific principles and practices applicable to test protocols, procedures, methods and analytical system, in order to set up and operate equipment and conduct testing on engineering materials and related products, to produce accurate and valid test results (e.g. to ensure that engineering materials and related products used in MTO construction contracts have met established criteria such as specification requirements).
  • Document and analyze test results; prepare reports with findings and recommendations.
  • Operate laboratory equipment and machinery, ensuring calibration and maintenance as required.
  • Assist in the development and improvement of testing procedures and methodologies.
  • Participate in material analysis and failure investigations as needed.
  • Provide technical support to clients and internal teams regarding testing procedures and outcomes.
  • Possibility of travel to various work sites across Ontario to assist with field sampling (Ministry of Transportation Ontario Superpave Correlation Sampling, etc.).
  • General activities related to the daily functioning of the laboratory facility (calibration of equipment, housekeeping, communication with staff from other AtkinsRéalis offices, sample storage, etc.).
  • Job requires knowledge of the operation, capabilities and limitations of automated and manual testing equipment for the materials under test, to troubleshoot procedures and equipment and to operate and maintain it safely, to avoid injury and damage to equipment. Enthusiastic participation in health and safety programs.

The ideal candidate:

  • 0 to 2 years experience required.
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering or any related field from an accredited institution.
  • Engineer in Training (E.I.T) certification or able to obtain within 6 months of the start date is a plus.
  • Strong understanding of materials properties and testing techniques.
  • Interpersonal skills to work as part of a team with technical and professional staff, and to understand the sensitivity and broader implications of test information (e.g. impact of test results on payment and contract operations) Job requires ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy in testing and reporting.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills as well as analytical skills.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record to operate company vehicles.
  • Professional Registrations:
    • Willing to gain work experience as required to apply for the P.Eng. designation in the Province of Ontario.
