Come join us in reshaping the future with AtkinsRéalis. AtkinsRéalis is dedicated in engineering a better future for our planet and its people.

The Rail and Transit Engineering Guideway Design and Integration Designer position is ideal for an individual looking for an introduction to rail and transit engineering. We are looking for someone able to handle a diverse workload anything from CAD drafting to client meetings to leading design packages.

Location: Toronto, ON.

Your role within the team:

  • Design and coordination of various right-of-way components including but not limited to cable and cable routing systems, walkways, guideway lighting, vehicle clearances, sightlines, multi-disciplinary interfacing and space-proofing, at-grade, and grade- separated crossings, operational signage, structural interfaces, signals and train control interfaces, trackside equipment, and other wayside components.
  • Cable and cable routing:
    • This includes cable trough and/or duct bank designs, cable fill ratio calculations and cable routing utilizing DAD software. Considerations to be given to cable bend radii, EMI/EMC separations and other requirements.
  • Walkways:
    • Emergency and service walkways clear of vehicle dynamic envelopes, coordinated with all infrastructure along the guideway to provide code compliant design.
    • Handrails, track crossings, ramps and steps are also part of the walkway design package.
  • Guideway Lighting:
    • Lighting of tunnels, portals, cross-passages, switch special trackwork, emergency exit/access locations, rail yards, etc.
    • Photometric and voltage drop calculations, luminaire, pole and foundation specifications, Emergency Lighting & Blue Lighting.
  • Guideway Integration:
    • Provide technical oversight to individual disciples proving the project with a fully coordinated and integrated design.
    • Combined Services
    • Multi-disciplinary interfacing and space-proofing provided by extracting design details from the various packages to accurately represent them in various cross sections. These drawings are also used to confirm vehicle clearances and walkway envelopes.
  • Operational signage:
    • Model signs in 3D with their associated pole or wall mount details and incorporate into the federated model for visualization and clash detection
    • Signing elements along the guideway such as design speeds, operational speeds, turnout locations and ID’s, fouling points, signals, walkways, and others.
  • Coordinate design and manage requirements with design groups of various specialization including, but not limited to facilities/mechanical, electrical, power supply systems, trackwork, civil, structural, telecommunications, landscaping, drainage, and utilities. This role emphasizes having general knowledge of rail design disciplines to facilitate creating valuable and practical design solutions.
  • Coordinate design and manage requirements with external consultants and other third parties including, but not limited to: architects, design code consultants, suppliers, and client representatives. Heavy emphasis of essentializing complex engineering concepts to communicate with non-engineering parties.
  • Collaborate with construction counterparts for design optimization and manage project schedule.
  • Use CAD/3D modelling software to design multiple engineering systems and visualize design solutions. Extensive working knowledge of Civil 3D, Revit, and MicroStation design programs is preferred. Implementation of macros and automated Dynamo workflows is an asset.
  • Use BIM federated models to coordinate design solutions and manage design conflicts. Create and maintain data-rich BIM designs to ensure design can interface with both logical and physical design disciplines and automate design process to drive team productivity.
  • Identify scope gaps and value-creation opportunities for projects. Facilitate the production of innovative and bespoke design packages. Assist interfacing disciplines with design and modelling of solutions to fulfill project requirements.
  • Provide procurement and construction support, including responding to Requests for Information (RFI) and reviewing vendor documents.
  • Construction site reviews may be required to ensure conformance to contract documents during construction. Site reports, photos, and preparation of other documentation required. Ensure safe work practices are followed during site inspections.
