Materials Engineer - Nuclear

__jobinformationwidget.freetext.LocationText__

Bristol

R-116445

Are you a Materials Engineer, with a background in either manufacturing, welding, non-destructive examination (NDE) or corrosion, who thrives on difficult problems? Are you drawn to complex design projects and excited by the opportunity to rapidly move on to leadership positions, heading up projects and guiding junior engineers?

If so, you might enjoy solving the energy industry’s most important materials challenges across a variety of clients. You could be assessing the materials degradation risks and improving the lifetime of operating nuclear power plants, developing new applications, methods and testing procedures for manufacturing and welding of future reactors, collaboratively working with designers and manufacturers to solve problems and implement solutions in materials compatibility and fabrication.

You’ll be supporting the UK Submarine and Nuclear New Build programmes, or enabling one of many renewable energy projects across a growing carbon net zero portfolio. You’re likely to be juggling several projects simultaneously, so adaptability is a must! The constant in this role is the complex nature of the jobs and the chance to provide innovative solutions to a range of problems for several appreciative clients.

Whichever energy-related projects you get involved in, you’ll be engaged in the development of engineering solutions to the industry’s most challenging problems, so you’ll be making an important and rewarding contribution to the energy and environmental security of the UK and beyond.

If you are a self-starter who can deliver multiple projects at the same time, working closely with clients and internal teams to capture requirements, set up projects, and deliver right-first-time solutions for the most challenging problems in the energy industry, then we’d love you to apply.

Role requirements:

You will work within small to medium sized multidisciplinary teams. To benefit from the collective experience of the team, our clients, and drive innovative thinking, you’ll work in a collaborative and supportive office / site environment for a minimum of half of your working week. You may also be based at client offices or plant sites. You will bring a level of commercial awareness to working within those teams to effectively deliver tasks for multiple workstreams and to deliver to time, quality, and cost.

Essential criteria:

  • A degree in Materials Engineering, Metallurgy, Corrosion or other relevant mechanical engineering disciplines (or equivalent work-based experience).
  • Demonstrable work experience in solving materials, manufacturing, welding and corrosion challenges in the nuclear, conventional power or offshore industries.
  • Demonstrable work experience in writing accurate, detailed, and concise technical reports relevant to the role (e.g., materials selection reports, fabrication and welding specifications, inspection and quality plans, corrosion / ageing management strategies).
  • Comfortable with engaging with existing and prospective clients, working at their sites, and investing time in understanding their issues, goals, and processes.

Please flag if you have experience in any of the following (but still apply if you might enjoy gaining that experience too):

  • Design for manufacturing using established models, design codes, procedures and databases. Working with design and construction codes such as ASME, RCC-M, or harmonised EN standards.
  • Conventional machining, welding, non-destructive examination, and dimensional inspection.
  • Materials performance and ageing mechanisms in nuclear power plants.
  • Coolant chemistry and mitigation of oxidation / corrosion in reactor coolants.
  • Working, or authoring bids, within a safety critical and heavily regulated environment.
  • Or if you are chartered with a relevant professional institute (or approaching application for registration).
