Our Nuclear Canada business is experiencing significant growth driven in part by planned New Build projects underway internationally and domestically. Candu Energy Inc., an AtkinsRéalis company has entered into an agreement with Ontario Power Generation (OPG) to deliver the Darlington New Nuclear Project (DNNP). The project is spearheading the deployment of the GEH BWRX-300 Small Modular Reactor (SMR) before the end of the decade. It will be the first grid-scale SMR deployed in Canada.
The Senior Engineering Manager (EM) – Multidisciplinary- is a member of Site Engineering Office and Project Management Team (PMT) on DNNP and is responsible for leading a multidisciplinary team of Civil, Mechanical, Process, I&C, Electrical and designers engaged in supporting all design and analysis activities for, procurement, verification, governance, and site engineering dispositions, including as built Engineering packages. The Senior Engineering Manager oversees the execution of design and technical activities in a project delivery environment in accordance with industry standards and established governance. The Senior Engineering Manager will report functionally to the Functional Engineering Director-Candu Engineering, and Project Director on the project delivery group.
This role will require close stakeholder management of the integrated partners and client, as well as leadership of project team members (will be part of the PMT organization on DNNP). The Senior Engineering/Technical Manager is expected to have significant experience in design of nuclear power plants, project delivery and project execution methodology including an understanding of engineering, procurement, construction, contract management and project controls principles. Leading integrated teams is an equally important skill; developing and building a large team of professionals is a requirement of this role.
This role will be based in Mississauga, ON.
Your role within the team:
- Managing the design process from detailed design to site implementation.
- Planning and executing work consistent with quality, cost, and schedule requirements.
- Coordinating and oversight of computer design activities related to the completion of fundamental design for a nuclear power plant.
- Coordinating the design interface between the NSP and balance of plant (BOP) portions of a nuclear power plant for site implementation for BOP.
- Working with assigned staff to find optimal solutions to project challenges.
- Working with assigned staff to develop /modify design changes to Nuclear SSC.
- Providing technical guidance to staff, as appropriate.
- Ensuring that work is conducted in accordance with applicable Engineering and Quality Assurance procedures, and in accordance with the contract, applicable specifications, and technical requirements.
- Interfacing with stakeholders, including Engineering peers, Modelling, Procurement, Construction representatives, and prospective equipment and/or system vendors, to ensure system designs meet performance, safety, and regulatory requirements, and that the resulting designs are constructable, operable, and maintainable.
- Ensuring department deliverables are produced in accordance with budget, schedule, quality, and technical requirements.
- Approving engineering documents and deliverables.
- Collaborating with clients and overseeing the completion of engineering deliverables in accordance with the signed contract, approved customer specifications, and technical requirements.
- Managing interfaces between engineering discipline.
- Removing barriers that could impact safety, quality, cost, and schedule performance.
- Participating in the preparation of commercial proposals and approving the technical content of proposals prepared under their direction.
- Forecasting resource demands for the assigned work scope, including required skills, capabilities, and durations.
- Working with marketing and other business groups to maintain and improve client relationships and offerings.
- Preparing and leading Engineering proposals.
- The Senior Engineering Manager will oversee the work of Engineering team and Engineering managers on multiple scopes. Supervisory responsibilities include:

The ideal candidate:
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, or related field from an accredited University.
- Registered Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario with good standing.
- 15-20 years of experience in Civil Engineering.
- 10 or more years of experience in leading engineering teams.
- Experience managing multidisciplinary engineering work with interfacing requirements involving other engineering team, from detailed design, configuration control, to site/field implementation.
- Approving engineering documents and deliverables. Design engineering experience in Civil /Structural Engineering and related Codes and Standards for Nuclear Power Plants is highly preferable.
- Oversee the preparation of Governance, Regulatory, Integrated Team (GRIT) procedures under the integrated partners (IPA) for use.
- Experience in nuclear and/or CANDU technology modifications.
- Experience working in a nuclear facility licensed in Canada.
- Experience in Computer System Architecture and software code for CANDU simulator, DCC, Safety Systems, Fuel Handling System, Distribution Control System and Cyber Security is an asset.
- Experience with cyber security for Operational Technology for Safety System Computers is an asset.
- Experience and capability in regulatory communications in a regulated industry is an asset.
- Experience with cyber security for Operational Technology for Safety System Computers is an asset.
- Experience in managing multiple small to mid-size Engineering projects in an operating station.
- Experience delivering an overall plant control system design of a power production facility.
- Experience in interfacing with utilities for brown field modification to SSC.
- Knowledge in OPG and Bruce Power ECC process and Data Management System.
- Knowledge of Quality Management System (CSA N286), quality standards (CSA N299) and digital hardware standard (CSA 290.14).
- Working knowledge of/experience with the CSA and IEC standards pertaining to Electrical, I&C and Computer Engineering.
- Working knowledge of nuclear and industry codes and standards in their core engineering discipline.
- Experience in Engineering Change Control process for Field run as build conditions to the Station/Plant, CSA N285.0/CSA N286 and ASME Codes and Standards. Provide dispositions to non-conformances identified by construction and supply chain. Update Technical Specifications when required.
- Working knowledge of station modification procedures for OPG and Bruce Power.
- Working knowledge of the nuclear regulatory framework in Canada.
- Commercial acumen, with knowledge in procurement, contracts, supply chain, and/or logistics.
- Station operations and/or station maintenance experience in a plant controls facility is an asset.
- Proven track record of performance in a multidiscipline, dynamic, project delivery environment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent organizational, and project management skills.
Other Aspects (If Applicable):
- Will need to travel to and potentially work at sites to meet business needs, inclusive of project (construction) site and equipment / component suppliers. (Note: the primary location will be our Mississauga campus, based on a combination of project requirements working at CHQ Oshawa officed located to the east of Toronto near and at the project site in Courtice-Darlington Nuclear in Ontario).
