The Technical Manager is a member of the Project Management Team responsible for leading a group of Feeder and Piping designers and analysts. The Technical Manager oversees the execution of design, analysis and technical activities in a project delivery environment in accordance with industry standards and established governance. The Technical Manager will report functionally to the Project Technical Director.

This role will be based in Mississauga, ON.

Your role within the team:

The Technical Manager Mechanical Piping Design will be responsible for:

  • All aspects of piping design related to Feeder/Piping Design, Layout and Analysis.
  • Managing the design and stress analysis scope from concept to preliminary to detailed design.
  • Planning and executing work consistent with quality, cost, and schedule requirements, and removing any associated barriers.
  • Coordinating and overseeing Feeders and Piping Engineering activities related to the completion of fundamental design for a nuclear power plant.
  • Coordinating all design interfaces between the Nuclear Steam Plant (NSP) and Balance of Plant (BOP) systems.
  • Working with assigned staff to find optimal solutions to technical challenges.
  • Providing technical guidance to staff, as appropriate.
  • Ensuring that work is conducted in accordance with applicable Engineering and Quality Assurance procedures, and in accordance with the contract, applicable specifications, and technical requirements.
  • Interfacing with stakeholders, including Engineering peers, Procurement, Construction representatives, and prospective equipment and/or system vendors, to ensure system designs meet performance, safety, and regulatory requirements, and that the resulting designs are constructable, operable, and maintainable.
  • Ensuring project deliverables are produced in accordance with budget, schedule, quality, and technical requirements.
  • Approving engineering documents and deliverables.
  • Participating in the preparation of commercial proposals and approving the technical content of proposals prepared under their direction.
  • Forecasting resource demands for the assigned work scope, including required skills, capabilities, and durations.
  • Managing customer relationships.

The ideal candidate:

  • Knowledge of CANDU Feeder and Piping systems design, analysis and installation is an asset.
  • Eligibility for the qualification in ASME III appendix XXIII qualification is an asset.
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent from an accredited institution.
  • Registered Professional Engineer in a Province of Canada, member in good standing.
  • A minimum 8 years of experience in piping analysis and design.
  • A minimum 5 years of experience in a people leadership role.
  • Experience managing engineering work with significant interfacing requirements with other engineering teams including Reactor Components, Licensing, Safety Analysis, Civil / Structural, and Electrical/I&C.
  • Experience working within a Quality Management System (CSA N286), and quality standards (CSA N299).
  • Experience managing and/or performing work under nuclear Codes and Standards such as CSA N285 & ASME Section III and ASME B31.1 codes and any other applicable standards or regulatory guides related to permanent plant components, pressure boundary equipment, and/or reactor systems.
  • Experience in piping systems design, layout, stress analysis and FEA methods.
  • Experience in Nuclear Class 1, 2, 3 and 6 piping systems, valves, pumps and for Nuclear Power Plants is an asset.
  • Experience working in a nuclear facility licensed in Canada is an asset.
  • Working knowledge of analytical tools used for mechanical design and analysis (e.g., ANSYS, LS-DYNA, GT-STRUDEL, Pipe Stress, Auto Pipe, or similar).
  • Working knowledge of design registration / reconciliation with the Authority Having Jurisdiction.
  • Proven track record of performance in a multidiscipline, dynamic, project delivery environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, and presentation skills.
  • Excellent organization and time management skills.
  • The Technical Manager will oversee the work of 10 to 20 piping designers and analysts. Supervisory responsibilities include:
    • Fostering a positive team environment where good performance is recognized and celebrated.
    • Promoting a culture of safety, quality, and inclusiveness.
    • Promoting the use of human performance tools.
    • Managing staff training, qualifications, knowledge transfer, and development plans.
    • Coaching for improved performance, including goal setting, performance feedback, and evaluation.
    • Performing various administrative tasks.
    • Talent management, including recruitment in collaboration with project stakeholders.
  • Other Aspects (If Applicable):
    • Willing to travel to and potentially work at Project sites to meet business needs (Note: the initial site location is at the Mississauga head office in Ontario).
    • Security Clearance with Public Services and Procurement Canada is a condition of employment.
