From gap year to tech career: Why apprenticeships work

Hello from AtkinsRéalis in Bristol, UK. My name is Sophia. I'm a Data Technician Apprentice on the Nuclear, Ops and Commercial team and a Lava Lab Technician. Ever since I can remember, I've always wanted to go to university. We had limited info about apprenticeships at school and pressure from peers and teachers to go to uni.

Exploring alternatives to university: Sophia's apprenticeship journey

During my gap year working a full-time admin job, I became interested in developing myself in the working world. Networking events introduced me to apprentices who shared a positive outlook on their experiences, completely changing my perspective and sparking my search for opportunities. The idea of earning while learning from experts really excited me. After exploring various apprenticeships, I was drawn to the Data Technician Apprenticeship—and I'm now studying Digital Business Accelerator at Multiverse.

How virtual work experience and networking led me to a top apprenticeship?

During my gap year, I explored ways to expand my knowledge and learn about different companies. That's when I discovered the Springpod Virtual Work Experience programme, which introduced me to AtkinsRéalis' brilliant initiatives. Watching YouTube videos like Who Said Apprentices Couldn't Excel in Advanced Digital Careers? further sparked my interest, showcasing the amazing opportunities apprentices enjoy and the many benefits of this career path.

Inside Lava Labs: The cutting-edge spaces that fuel collaboration and innovation

Lava Labs are dynamic digital collaboration spaces where we use cutting-edge technology like VR, digital whiteboards, and immersive tools to support innovation. They bring people together—clients, engineers, and teams—to deliver smarter solutions. Every trip to the London Lava Lab has been the highlight of my apprenticeship so far.

Unforgettable experiences: Glasgow, London, and working with Spot the Dog

During the first weeks of my programme, I visited the London Lava Lab, learning about our immersive rooms and meeting my team. On a recent trip, I got to walk Spot the Dog, Boston Dynamics' Agile Mobile Robot, around the office. My most exciting trip was to Glasgow for an away day, where senior leaders discussed 2024 and opportunities for 2025—an incredible chance to be part of key conversations. These experiences have fueled my passion for early career opportunities, and I'm eager to help others discover their benefits.

How AtkinsRéalis connects purpose with impactful community initiatives?

Helping others has always been a passion of mine, and stability is one of my core values. I understand that not everyone is fortunate to have it. My interest in the world around me, sparked by my geography studies, often left me wondering if I could ever make a tangible impact. That's where AtkinsRéalis came in. Its purpose of engineering a better future resonated deeply—a company driven by profit AND creating value for clients and communities. Initiatives like EDAROTH, which ensures everybody has a roof over their head, stood out, offering a way to align my values with action and providing stability to others through affordable housing.

How to get started: Tips for finding the right apprenticeship path

Follow your curiosity! Start by reflecting on your strengths and what you enjoy, then research apprenticeship opportunities to see which aligns with you. There is no better person to gain knowledge from than someone already in that position, so reach out to an apprentice. They're the best source for insights on the program and company culture. You can do this and a lot more when you register on our Connectr platform. If you're still unsure, apply to both university and apprenticeships. Having options is always the best way forward!
