Non-cognate graduate to surveyor! My AtkinsRéalis experience.

Hello, I'm Alex, an assistant building surveyor in the Project and Programme Services team here in London. I help clients manage their assets by conducting condition surveys, advising on necessary works, and overseeing projects for safe, long-lasting outcomes. I studied international business and was drawn to the fast-paced global economy. Learning about climate change sparked my passion for sustainable construction. I was drawn to its variety and impact—especially in improving existing buildings for future generations. AtkinsRéalis felt like the perfect fit—its collaborative, sustainability-driven culture aligned with my values. And, although I didn't have a construction qualification, I knew I'd get the support here to develop my skills and learn on the job. Read more about non-engineering careers with us.

What is it like to work as a graduate building surveyor at AtkinsRéalis?

I've had a brilliant graduate experience at AtkinsRéalis and highly recommend it to early-career professionals. The Early Careers Network connects you with internal and external events to expand your professional network, while regular team socials—from cinema trips to darts tournaments—offer something for everyone. I hadn't played a team sport in years, so joining the social tag rugby and netball teams was a great way to reconnect. Now, I help organize office events and fundraising activities. If you're new to AtkinsRéalis, you'll find an inclusive, welcoming culture with plenty of ways to get involved. Discover more about life inside AtkinsRéalis.

How does AtkinsRéalis support early-career professionals in building surveying?

As a non-cognate graduate, I completed my master's in building surveying part-time over two years alongside my role, applying what I learned directly to real projects. From day one, I gained hands-on experience across various tasks, shadowing colleagues and building confidence in my role. Studying while working accelerated my development and complemented my practical learning style. AtkinsRéalis' collaborative culture made a huge difference—colleagues are approachable, and asking questions is always encouraged. I've also benefited from professional development training, like monthly Lunch & Learn sessions, internal presentations, and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) resources, including Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) iSurv. My goal is to achieve chartered status with RICS, and having access to these learning platforms has been invaluable. Here's how you'll develop your skills with us.

What does a contract administrator do in construction projects?

As a contract administrator on fabric maintenance projects, I act as the principal consultant for the client, ensuring construction works run smoothly, on time, and on budget. When managing works at an operational site, minimizing disruptions is critical. This was a key challenge when conducting yard surface repairs at a 24/7 Parcelforce warehouse, where heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) needed constant access. Closing the yard entirely wasn't an option, so we took a phased approach, hoarding off individual sections at a time.

To successfully programme the works, I worked closely with the client and contractor to plan around traffic flow, scheduling repairs during quieter periods to reduce disruption and keep workers safe. We used barriers, hazard cones, and a traffic marshal to manage vehicle movement. At the same time, steel plates covered curing concrete, allowing continued yard use. When some plate fixings came loose, we quickly adapted by implementing a temporary reduced speed limit, preventing harsh braking from destabilizing the plates. Through strong communication and collaboration, we overcame challenges, minimized disruptions, and kept business operations running smoothly. Ask a current grad about the projects they've worked on.

#BrilliantAtWork: How do building surveyors contribute to sustainability and safety?

My work helps create a safe, sustainable, and accessible built environment. I now manage fabric maintenance projects for Royal Mail, ensuring their buildings remain safe and functional. I address key health and safety issues, from fire door repairs to fixing leaks and installing fall protection. As a building surveyor, I act as a building doctor for buildings—identifying defects and prescribing solutions to protect people and their spaces. Read how we're shaping a better future.
