Are you ready to step into a key role within some of the industry’s most impactful projects? Join our dynamic team, where your ideas matter, your voice is valued, and we take on challenges together to create meaningful solutions for our clients. Our workplace thrives on diversity and inclusion, recognizing that excellence comes from varied perspectives and experiences.

We understand that work-life balance is essential. Flexible and remote working are deeply embedded in our culture, so let us know what works for you—whether that’s reduced workweeks or extra leave during school holidays. If you’re returning from a career break, we’re here to support your smooth transition back into the workforce.

The Role
We're seeking a Principal Engineer/Chief Engineer to strengthen our Bridges and Civils team within our Transportation Practice, based in Birmingham. As a key leader, you’ll contribute to high-profile projects in the Midlands and beyond, encompassing transportation, local authority work, and civil engineering structures throughout the UK and internationally.

Your technical and leadership skills will drive the delivery of diverse civil and structural design packages, supporting projects for new-build highways, rail schemes, asset management, and more. You’ll be instrumental in managing design packages, overseeing project resourcing, and ensuring financial control to deliver successful projects aligned with AtkinsRéalis' quality standards.

What You'll Bring
We’re looking for someone with a civil engineering background and a passion for delivering complex, multi-disciplinary projects in highway, rail, or local authority contexts. You’ll thrive in our collaborative, geographically diverse teams, contributing to projects at every phase, from initial feasibility through to detailed design.

Qualifications:

  • BEng / MEng or MSc degree in Civil Engineering (or equivalent).
  • Chartered status and membership in ICE or IStructE.

What Sets You Apart:

  • Proven expertise in the design, maintenance, and management of civil or structural projects, with a track record of innovation in highway or rail structures.
  • Hands-on experience in bridge design, maintenance, assessment, or railway civil engineering.
  • Strong analytical skills to develop effective engineering solutions, with a strategic mindset to select the best options.
  • Expertise in producing high-quality design documentation, including sketches, drawings, reports, and specifications.
  • Skill in conducting technical reviews and supporting project bids and tenders.
  • In-depth knowledge of relevant design standards (e.g., DMRB, MCHW, Eurocodes, Network Rail Standards).
  • Strong project management skills, with commercial acumen, financial oversight, and stakeholder management abilities.

Why Choose Us?

Here, you’re more than an employee—you’re part of a community that values quality, innovation, and flexibility. We offer a supportive culture where your career thrives alongside work-life balance. Whether you’re advancing your career or transitioning back to the field, we’re committed to your success.

Join us and be a part of a team that’s transforming the landscape of transportation engineering for a more sustainable future.

Why work for AtkinsRéalis?

Our Transportation teams are reinventing transport for a challenging yet exciting future. We're creating new ideas and smart solutions for cities, people and the environment. You'll be working alongside some of the top people in our industry, solving challenges that bring together traditional engineering and new technologies. As part of our organisation, you'll be in a privileged position, delivering what's right for governments and communities. You'll be helping us to improve our leading environmental performance while enabling others to do the same.

Security clearance:

This role may require security clearance and offers of employment will be dependent on obtaining the relevant level of clearance.  If this is necessary, it will be discussed with you at interview. The vetting process is delivered by United Kingdom Security Vetting (UKSV) and may require candidates to provide proof of residency in the UK of 5 years or longer. If applying to this role please do not make reference to (in conversation) or include in your application or CV, details of any current or previously held security clearance.

We are committed to promoting a diverse and inclusive community - a place where we can all be ourselves, thrive and develop. To help embed inclusion for all, from day one, we offer a range of family friendly, inclusive employment policies, flexible working arrangements and employee networks to support staff from different backgrounds. As an Equal Opportunities Employer, we value applications from all backgrounds, cultures and ability.
