AtkinsRéalis are looking for an Environmental Compliance Specialist, in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

We are seeking a meticulous and detail-oriented team member to undertake Environmental Compliance on the Project portfolio. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in environmental regulations, documentation requirements, and auditing procedures, with the ability to assess compliance with environmental permits and local legislation. This role involves conducting thorough reviews of environmental documentation and practices, identifying areas for improvement, and ensuring that consultants and contractors adhere to established environmental standards, schedules and commitments.

Our Strategic Advisory team is seeking an experienced Environmental Consultant to join our KSA-based team. The successful candidate will bring proven experience in environmental consulting, particularly on large-scale international projects, ideally in KSA, UAE, and the wider Middle East region.

The role requires expertise in coordinating and delivering Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) studies, contributing environmental insights to master planning, and preparing and implementing construction-related environmental management plans, including site monitoring and auditing.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Documentation Review:

  • Conduct comprehensive reviews of environmental documentation, including environmental impact assessments (EIAs), environmental management plans (EMPs), permits, licenses, and other regulatory documents.

  • Verify that environmental assessments and reports are accurate, complete, and compliant with applicable regulations, permit conditions, and project requirements.

  • Identify any discrepancies, errors, or omissions in environmental documentation and provide recommendations for corrective actions.

2. Compliance Assessment:

  • Contribute to the development of implementation strategies and action plans for environmental compliance in project delivery processes.

  • Evaluate environmental practices and activities conducted by consultants, contractors, and project stakeholders to ensure compliance with environmental permits, regulations, and local legislation.

  • Conduct on-site inspections and audits to assess environmental performance, waste management practices, pollution prevention measures, and other relevant environmental aspects.

  • Document findings and observations in audit reports, highlighting areas of non-compliance and opportunities for improvement.

3. Regulatory Compliance:

  • Ensure all authority requirements have been addressed through additional studies/reports, change registers and compensation strategies etc..

  • Stay abreast of changes to environmental regulations, permit conditions, and local legislation affecting project activities.

  • Interpret and apply regulatory requirements to assess compliance with environmental standards and permit conditions.

  • Communicate findings and recommendations to project stakeholders, regulatory agencies, and other relevant parties as needed.

4. Consultant and Contractor Oversight:

  • Collaborate with project managers to ensure that consultants and contractors adhere to environmental requirements, scope of responsibilities, and best practices throughout project implementation.

  • Provide guidance and support to consultants and contractors on environmental compliance issues, including the interpretation of permit conditions and regulatory requirements.

  • Monitor the implementation of corrective actions and follow-up on identified non-conformities to ensure resolution.

5. Reporting and Documentation:

  • Prepare detailed internal audit reports documenting findings, observations, and recommendations for improving environmental compliance.

  • Maintain accurate records of audit activities, including documentation reviewed, audit schedules, findings, corrective actions, and follow-up activities.

Present audit findings and recommendations to Internal management, project teams, and regulatory authorities as required.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in environmental science, environmental engineering, or a related field.

  • At least 8-10 years of experience in environmental compliance, auditing, or a related field, preferably in a consulting or regulatory environment.

  • Strong knowledge of environmental regulations, permit requirements, and local legislation pertaining to construction, development, and industrial activities.

  • Experience conducting environmental audits, inspections, and compliance assessments, including familiarity with audit methodologies and best practices.

  • Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail, with the ability to identify compliance issues, root causes, and corrective actions.

Additional Requirements:

  • Willingness for regular travel to project sites for on-site inspections and audits.

  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks simultaneously, while also collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams.
