In joining our Nuclear & Power business, you’ll be part of one of four key teams in the UK:

  • Power New Build
  • Reactor Operations & Decommissioning
  • Net Zero Energy
  • Decommissioning & Waste Services.

Requirements: Minimum 2.2 Bachelors/BEng degree in Civil or Structural Engineering

As a Graduate Civil and Structural Engineer within the Power New Build team you will be supporting the UK’s and world’s ambition to achieve Net Zero emission targets. You will have the opportunity to work on numerous exciting projects for a wide range of clients both in the UK and internationally (UAE, Europe, Canada, US, etc.). Some of the projects you could be working on are: 

  • Hinkley Point C – AtkinsRéalis is one of the major suppliers for the design and construction of the HPC site. We are growing and expanding our team to not only cover civil work but also MEH programmes.
  • Sizewell C – AtkinsRéalis is the main civil works designer for Sizewell C, delivering everything from enabling works and site establishment, to detailed design of nuclear buildings.
  • Fusion –AtkinsRéalis is involved in the UKAEA STEP and HEAT fusion programmes supporting the development of Fusion technology in the UK.
  • Small Modular Reactors - AtkinsRéalis is the lead Civil, Structural and Architectural designer for the SMR programme. Our team is delivering a world class project, looking at transforming large complex infrastructure programme into a fully integrated factory with a relentless focus on modularisation, using a combination of best in practice with innovative construction materials and methods.
  • International projects – our team is also involved in projects in the ME, Europe and US and Canada, providing international experience.

Linked to our wide portfolio of projects clients and design stages, we can offer a wide variety of work diet: 

  • Site construction support across different sites, our major site being HPC.
  • Design of enabling works and general civils projects for power stations.
  • Safety case support, producing the design substantiation for nuclear power plant safety and seismically classified structures.
  • Specialist support and technical issues resolution, pushing the boundaries of the codes and using detailed FE analysis.
  • Building design, from layout concept design to full detail design, working closely with other disciplines.
  • Access to world class technical specialists and mentors to support and develop your career. We are a team of 100 civil engineers, mainly based around Bristol and Epsom, with our teams rapidly growing in Sheffield and Manchester.
  • Digital is at the core of what we do, and we try to push the boundaries on how we deliver our projects using laser scan technology, drones, and 3D/4D modelling.

We are looking for enthusiastic graduate candidates with a good understanding of civil and structural engineering, who are motivated to develop their knowledge in the nuclear energy sector. You will enjoy cultivating strong working relationships and developing your technical skills and management expertise to deliver outstanding results for our clients. You will also receive mentoring support from our skilled and experienced engineers to get accredited with professional institutions like ICE or IStructE funded by AtkinsRéalis.

Within this team you’ll find yourself working primarily on projects across the energy system. Our portfolio of projects encompasses asset integrity, design, and assurance for a variety of clients across a broad spectrum of facilities ranging from electrical substations, district heating, biomass, gas and combined heat & power networks to large scale generation plant, gas and oil storage and decentralised energy assets. The broad nature of our project portfolio means you will be working on a variety of projects ranging from large interdisciplinary design and construction projects to supporting clients with discipline specific technical advice. The teams and projects you will be working with are at the core of the company’s long terms focus on diverse, clean power generation and have an emphasis on achieving net zero, your work is an important part of this.

As a graduate Civil and Structural Engineer within the Net Zero Energy team you will have the opportunity to work on exciting projects within multi-disciplinary teams. There is a wide range of technical skills that you can develop including the design of reinforced concrete and steel structures using various UK and international codes and standards, structural assessment for complicated loadings such as seismic, blast and impact. You will also have the opportunity to gain project management experience, as well as engage with clients and regulators.

As a Graduate Civil Engineer within Reactor Operations and Decommissioning, you will join a growing and vibrant team and find yourself immersed in a diverse portfolio of work covering the entire nuclear lifecycle in both the civil nuclear sector and UK defence industry. With the knowledge and skills that you’ve gained throughout your studies, you’ll be ready to start this exciting next chapter within a diverse team of highly skilled engineers. As part of our team, you will be empowered to gain broad experience across our portfolio of work with key clients such as EDF, Magnox and Rolls-Royce.

You can expect to gain experience in a variety of working environments, including being based in our AtkinsRéalis offices around the UK, as well as gaining valuable site-based experience supporting our clients on their operating sites at the forefront of carbon neutral electricity generation. Our civil & structural engineering team provide technical design, repair specification and consultancy advice to our clients. In the early stages of the role, you’ll find yourself detailed checking calculations and documents. This will give you an insight into the standard and style that we produce our work here at AtkinsRéalis. This is also a good way to understand what the team are working on and what current projects involve. As you develop through these tasks, you’ll gradually be introduced to carrying out your own calculations with the teams' engineers happy to guide you and give advice. You’ll also identify customer requirements, produce specifications, support project management activities, and collaborate with clients as well as your AtkinsRéalis colleagues and our supply chain partners. All of this adds up to an outstanding environment to gain varied experience that will aid you with your professional development and progress towards professional registration.

We’re looking for graduates with a good understanding of civil & structural engineering and engineering design, who love the idea of applying their engineering skills to help keep the lights on, keep everyone safe, and ensure the clean evolution of the UK nuclear estate. You should also be keen to develop your knowledge, skills and understanding of the field and have an interest in the nuclear energy sector.

As a Graduate Civil and Structural Engineer within Decommissioning and Waste Services, you will be part of a team supporting clients within the Nuclear industry to deliver innovative solutions in a challenging decommissioning environment. You will be part of civil/structural team that works closely with the wider multi-disciplinary engineering group, who strive to use cutting edge technology in a range of projects and their delivery. You would be working on some of the most complex and challenging decommissioning projects within the Nuclear industry throughout a full project lifecycle. Ranging from initial concept phase, detailed design and delivery, implementation and construction on sites, to decommissioning works.

The workload we have gives a breadth of knowledge, learning and experience across all aspects of Civil/Structural Engineering. Our Team has a keen focus to develop graduates towards their professional accreditation with the ICE/IStructE (IEng/CEng level).

We are looking for graduates with a good understanding of civil & structural engineering and engineering design, who love the idea of applying their engineering skills to help solve some of the most complex problems in the nuclear industry, and ensure the clean evolution of the UK nuclear industry. You should also be keen to develop your knowledge, skills and understanding of the field and have an interest in the nuclear energy sector.
