Insights Earning and learning as a civil engineering apprentice
Did you know, our five most popular apprenticeships are Civil Engineering, Surveying & Project Management, Aerospace & Digital?
Meet Raj, one of our talented Civil Engineering Apprentices at AtkinsRéalis. As a Level 3 technician, his role is producing and amending drawings for projects. Working hand in hand with engineers, he ensures his drawings express everything necessary for the construction phase.
Who would you like to shout out to on National Apprentice Week?
Senior CAD Technician, Mike. When I first started, I sat in the office with him, and he was very welcoming and friendly. He showed me the ropes, from how to request work and record it in my time sheets, to using AutoCAD and MicroStation software. Mike also made me feel confident in the world of work and explained how the business runs internally, which is very valuable if you're young and have never worked in an office before.
As an apprentice, what is your relationship like with your seniors?
I feel trusted to get the job done by senior staff. For example, I was recently tasked to amend and complete a package of drawings by a certain deadline. This made me responsible for my own time management. I succeeded and delivered before the deadline.
Who decides which direction your career will go?
My line manager has supported and encouraged me to develop my career in different ways that interest me. I had an opportunity to work in the Structures team where my work was more drawings-based, working with engineers and doing calculations. I had to learn how to use new software which improved my technical skills. I’ve also had experience on the Signals team, focussing on allocating business resources, such as training. And most recently, I've been on site visits with the highways team to check out the work on smart motorways.
What has AtkinsRéalis made you realize you can do that you didn't think you could do before?
I can further expand my career and not be stuck in one sector. It has given me the realization of freedom within the company.
How would you like to #BuildTheFuture?
I'm proud to part of an organization pushing digital transformation to make the world a better place. And my goal is to continue the art of innovation, creating new and efficient ways to shape the planet for future generations. Work in the company of creators, apply for an apprenticeship with us.
