What you’ll be studying

You’ll undertake a Chartered Town Planner Level 7 Degree Apprenticeship programme at the University of Birmingham. Please click here to visit their website and read more about the programme. The apprenticeship will typically be undertaken over four years and the structure will be to attend university one day per week for the first two years, and work in the office the remainder of the time. Over the duration of the apprenticeship you will be required to spend a minimum of 20% of your working week working on your professional development and building of your evidence portfolio.

The entry requirement for this apprenticeship is a 2:1 Honours degree in a related discipline such as Planning, Geography, Environmental Science / Studies or Architecture.

As a Chartered Town Planner Degree Apprentice your mentors will support you as you train towards successful completion of the apprenticeship, gaining a Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) fully accredited Masters qualification, and Chartership with the RTPI

What you could be doing

Join us as an Apprentice at Atkins and be part of a team of big thinkers. You'll be paid for gaining your apprenticeship qualification while enjoying on-the-job mentoring and learning. Your skills will be essential to us, supporting the technical aspects of multidisciplinary projects. You'll be making a sustainable difference in people's lives, shaping towns and cities, reimagining transport and transforming energy and work across Cities & Development, Energy, Transportation, Water or Environment.

You’ll be joining a progressive planning and environmental team with a wide range of clients within the public and private sectors. You will help deliver expanding workloads and will play a role in the development of our growing national business, linking in with other parts of the environment, energy, transportation and design businesses throughout Atkins. While the post would be based in our Birmingham office, there may be a requirement to work out of other UK offices, where the need arises, in order to meet the demands of fluctuating workloads   

Examples of tasks you could undertake as an apprentice:

  • Carrying out research including planning policy reviews for energy, transport, water, environmental, housing, regeneration and other projects across the UK to establish the planning suitability of potential sites
  • Working with colleagues on the preparation of planning applications and supporting documents
  • Helping research, prepare and draft strategic planning documents affecting the use of public and private land, housing, energy and transport facilities  
  • Research to inform responses to tender opportunities
  • Supporting colleagues on client meetings and site visits
  • Helping discharge planning conditions
  • Assisting with masterplanning projects
  • Working successfully within a team
  • Managing workload and meeting set deadlines
