AtkinsRéalis is seeking an experienced and proactive Health and Safety on Design Manager to oversee the integration of health, safety, and risk management strategies during the design phase of a major infrastructure project.

The successful candidate will:

  • Ensure health and safety considerations are embedded into the design process from conceptualization to detailed design.
  • Collaborate with architects, engineers, and project teams to meet regulatory requirements.
  • Minimize risks and ensure the safety and well-being of all stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle.

Core Responsibilities

1. Health and Safety in Design

  • Integrate health and safety considerations into the design process for the infrastructure project.
  • Guide design teams to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, codes, and standards.
  • Advise on risks associated with design decisions and recommend safer alternatives or mitigation strategies.
  • Conduct regular reviews of design documents to uphold the highest health and safety standards.

2. Risk Assessment and Management

  • Lead comprehensive risk assessments during the design phase, identifying potential hazards and evaluating the impact of design decisions.
  • Develop and implement mitigation strategies to address identified risks.
  • Ensure designs minimize the risk of accidents, injuries, and occupational health issues during construction, operation, and maintenance phases.

3. Collaboration with Design Teams

  • Work closely with architects, engineers, and other design professionals to promote a safety-focused design culture.
  • Provide health and safety expertise on design solutions, including ergonomics, accessibility, construction methods, and environmental impacts.
  • Align health and safety goals with project objectives and timelines in collaboration with the project manager and stakeholders.

4. Design for Safe Construction and Maintenance

  • Ensure the design is safe for end users, construction workers during building phases, and maintenance personnel post-construction.
  • Collaborate with construction teams to ensure designs support safe working conditions.
  • Incorporate provisions for safe operation and maintenance, addressing long-term health and safety concerns.

5. Reporting and Documentation

  • Maintain accurate records of health and safety-related design activities, risk assessments, and compliance audits.

Core Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Architecture, Occupational Health and Safety, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 20 years of experience in health and safety management, particularly during the design phase of large-scale infrastructure projects.
  • In-depth knowledge of health and safety regulations, risk management principles, and industry best practices.
  • Proven experience conducting audits, risk assessments, and safety reviews in the design and construction sectors.
  • Strong understanding of construction processes and the ability to identify safety risks during the design stage.
  • Professional certifications in health and safety (e.g., NEBOSH, IOSH) are highly desirable.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team, balancing safety considerations with project needs.
