Insights How AtkinsRéalis supports Armed Forces employees: Stuart’s story
Transitioning from a military career to civilian life can be a daunting prospect, but at AtkinsRéalis, veterans and reservists are met with tailored support and opportunities to thrive.
Stuart Chambers, a veteran, reservist, and Principal Consultant in Digital Asset Management in Transportation, shares how his journey from the British Army to AtkinsRéalis has been enriched by our commitment to Armed Forces personnel.
Can you tell us about your military background and how it shaped your skills?
“I joined the British Army in 1999 after completing my Mechanical Engineering degree. My career spanned roles such as overseeing asset maintenance for the Corps of Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) and contributing to the deployment of the Apache AH-64D Regiment to Afghanistan.
These experiences instilled in me a results-driven mindset and an ability to manage complex operations under pressure. The leadership and management methodologies I learned in the Army have been invaluable in my civilian career.”
How has your military background supported your transition to a civilian role?
“The military’s structured approach to problem-solving is directly applicable to consultancy. For example, the seven questions estimate process has parallels in project management, enabling me to deliver efficient and effective solutions for clients.
Engineering disciplines often share foundations with military applications, so the transition felt natural. At AtkinsRéalis, these skills are celebrated and utilised to drive innovation.”
How did AtkinsRéalis’ Partnering with Armed Forces (PwAF) program support your career transition?
“The PwAF program was instrumental. I attended an Insight Day where I connected with employees who helped identify my transferable skills. The program’s flexible approach to evaluating CVs and understanding military experience ensured I found the right role.
Additionally, as a reservist, I benefit from extra paid leave for training camps, and the company’s internal networks on platforms like Yammer provide ongoing support and resources.”
What’s unique about working at AtkinsRéalis as a veteran or reservist?
“AtkinsRéalis truly understands the challenges faced by armed forces personnel transitioning to civilian roles. The company’s flexible working culture has allowed me to balance my consultancy role with my commitments as a reservist.
Whether it’s providing extra leave or fostering a culture of respect for military experience, AtkinsRéalis sets an example of how organisations can support veterans.”
Stuart’s advice for armed forces personnel transitioning to civvy street
- Choose an organisation that values hybrid working “Hybrid working allows flexibility in location, which was a key factor for me when joining AtkinsRéalis. It enabled me to work in North-East England while contributing to a global consultancy.”
- Look for Armed Forces Employer Recognition Scheme members “These organisations have demonstrated a commitment to supporting military personnel. They understand your unique skill set and can guide you toward suitable roles.”
- Consider joining the Reserves directly after Regular Service “The Reserves provide a sense of belonging and an opportunity to maintain military connections. They can also open doors to roles requiring security clearances or specialised expertise.”
