Highspeed Rail Radio Technical Lead

Overview

We are seeking a Highspeed Rail Radio Technical Lead to join our team in San Francisco, CA.

Under general direction, provides leadership and technical expertise in radio communications systems for high-speed rail projects across the organization. Responsible for the design, integration, and management of complex radio subsystems—including wireless communications, RF networks, and related safety-critical systems—ensuring all systems meet operational, safety, and regulatory standards. May function as the lead technical authority or project manager for major radio communications initiatives. Upholds engineering ethics and standards of conduct.

Your role

  • Leads and manages multidisciplinary teams in the design, implementation, and integration of radio communications systems for high-speed rail, including RF networks, wireless data transmission, and train-to-ground communications.
  • Oversees the development and implementation of radio system specifications, integration plans, and verification and validation strategies for large-scale high-speed rail projects.
  • Provides technical leadership in radio systems engineering, including frequency planning, interference analysis, risk assessment, and change control in accordance with industry standards (e.g., AREMA, IEEE, FRA, FTA, FCC).
  • Acts as the primary technical liaison with clients, regulatory agencies, and third-party vendors on all matters related to radio communications for high-speed rail projects.
  • Defines project scope related to radio systems, organizes and executes assignments, and ensures that all deliverables meet quality, safety, and performance standards.
  • Develops and implements radio system management plans, risk management strategies, and configuration management processes for complex high-speed rail projects.
  • Conducts quality control checks, reviews radio system documentation and specifications developed by design staff for accuracy and completeness, and oversees on-site inspections and remedial design work as needed.
  • Keeps abreast of state-of-the-art methods and developments in radio communications and systems engineering, and recommends changes or improvements to engineering plans and programs.
  • May function as the project manager for routine to complex radio communications projects, including responsibilities for marketing, contract negotiation, budgeting, financial management, schedule coordination, and resource allocation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor, particularly those related to radio systems management and integration.
  • Variety or uniqueness of tasks; relative difficulty or importance of work performed; size of unit supported, etc. Work involves coordination, research and problem solving on a variety of engineering projects with unique or controversial problems, the solution of which has an important effect on major organization programs.
  • Supervision received; independent judgment or initiative; consequence of error. Supervision received is essentially administrative, with assignments given in terms of broad general objectives and limits. Acts independently on technical matters relating to his/her field.
  • Titles and number of personnel; type of direction given. Supervises and/or coordinates with other senior professionals and support staff.
  • Required interaction/relationship with others within the organization. Interfaces with senior technical professionals, technical managers, and administrative staff and managers as necessary.
  • Required interaction/relationship with others outside the organization): Represents the organization in conferences with clients, prospective clients, and regulatory agencies.

About you

  • B.S. or M.S. in Electrical Engineering, Communications Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related field. M.S. or graduate-level technical coursework preferred.
  • 5 or more years of experience focused on radio communications or RF systems integration for high-speed rail or transit projects.
  • Demonstrated experience with radio system design tools and requirements management platforms.
  • 10 years of experience in rail, transit, or wireless communications is preferred.
  • Strong technical writing and communications skills, proven through technical presentations, technical papers, and/or participation in technical committees.
  • Demonstrated expertise in train control, signaling, and related safety-critical systems.
  • Familiarity with industry standards (e.g., AREMA, IEEE, FRA, FTA, FCC) and safety certification processes.
  • P.E. license is desired.

  • Ability to process paper/electronic documents and utilize computer equipment; ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing; ability to visit project sites if necessary. Additional information

Expected compensation range is between $101,900- $169,800 annually depending on skills, experience, and geographical location.
