Senior Engineer in Control and Protection

Overview

The Transport and Distribution unit of AtkinsRéalis is offering a full-time position for a Senior Engineer in Control and Protection, based in Montreal, QC.

The successful candidate will work within a multidisciplinary team on provincial, national, and international projects. This position offers excellent opportunities for growth and career development. In the long term, it provides the opportunity to carry out detailed engineering of control and protection systems for HV and MV AC substations, HVDC converter stations, reactive compensation systems (STATCOM, SVC, etc.), and power generation plants (conventional hydroelectric, pumped-storage hydro, thermal, wind farms, and others). The engineer in this role will be responsible for performing all design activities in compliance with applicable codes and standards, including all AtkinsRéalis policies and procedures regarding safety, environment, and quality assurance. The position reports to the Chief Engineer, Control and Protection.

Your Role

  • Perform preliminary and feasibility studies, and detailed engineering for substation and generating plant projects;

  • Prepare single-line diagrams for control and protection systems and auxiliary AC/DC services, as well as layout drawings;

  • Produce technical calculation notes for sizing/selection of equipment related to control and protection (current and voltage transformers, etc.) and auxiliary AC/DC equipment;

  • Perform load studies, short-circuit studies, and protection coordination studies;

  • Prepare relay protection settings and configuration files;

  • Prepare technical specifications, wiring diagrams, interconnection drawings, and layouts required for the fabrication of control and protection panels;

  • Occasionally visiting sites for surveys and measurements (equipment layout, data collection, technical support during construction, and grounding studies);

  • Work in collaboration with other members of the multidisciplinary project team.

About You

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering;

  • Member of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ);

  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience, particularly in engineering for control and protection for substations and power plants;

  • Experience working on substation or power plant projects with Hydro-Québec;

  • Experience with Hydro-Québec projects;

  • Good knowledge of software such as ETAP, ASPEN, or EasyPower is an asset;

  • Experience with protection relays used in substations and power plants (SEL, GE, ABB, Siemens, and others) and with SCADA/RTU systems is an asset;

  • Experience with software such as PSCAD or EMTP is an asset;

  • Proven ability to write technical reports;

  • Practical knowledge of modern protection relay technologies for electrical networks.

  • Fluency in written and spoken French.

  • Functional knowledge of written and spoken English.
