Senior Sustainability Engineer

Overview

The Senior Sustainability Engineer is responsible for leading and managing construction-stage sustainability implementation, compliance requirements, and certification processes throughout the project lifecycle. The role involves close coordination with Clients, Consultants, Contractors, multidisciplinary project teams, contractors, and regulatory authorities to ensure successful delivery of sustainability objectives and green building certification targets. The Senior Sustainability Engineer provides technical leadership during construction, ensuring sustainability requirements are effectively integrated into procurement, material approvals, construction activities, authority submissions, audits, and project handover processes.

Your role

Sustainability Management & Coordination

  • Lead and coordinate construction-stage sustainability activities across site operations, testing, commissioning, and handover stages.
  • Communicate sustainability certification requirements, updates, risks, and progress to project stakeholders and management teams.
  • Liaise with Contractors' Sustainability Managers/Engineers on daily sustainability-related matters and implementation strategies.
  • Coordinate with Architecture, MEP, Civil, Landscape, Infrastructure, QA/QC, and Commissioning teams to ensure sustainability requirements are incorporated into site activities and construction deliverables.
  • Organize, lead, and document sustainability meetings, workshops, and technical coordination sessions.
  • Provide technical guidance to project teams and contractors on sustainability compliance requirements, certification strategies, and implementation methodologies.
  • Identify sustainability-related risks, compliance gaps, and certification concerns and support development of mitigation measures.

Documentation Review & Compliance Tracking

  • Review contractual sustainability requirements, technical documentation, and contractor submissions for compliance with project sustainability targets.
  • Review construction-stage sustainability documentation and contractor submissions including:
    • Material submittals
    • Shop drawings
    • Technical reports
    • Sustainability plans and procedures
    • Calculations and compliance documentation
    • Review
  • Ensure sustainability comments and requirements are incorporated into procurement activities, material approvals, and construction documentation prior to implementation.
  • Track sustainability-related RFIs, technical queries, deviations, and alternative proposals to ensure continued compliance with project requirements.
  • Ensure all documentation complies with project sustainability requirements and KPIs.

Certification & Compliance

  • Manage and oversee construction-stage green building certification processes including LEED, Estidama, Al Sa'fat and WELL.
  • Coordinate sustainability submissions, approvals, and technical clarifications with regulatory authorities, certification bodies, clients, and third-party consultants.
  • Review and verify sustainability documentation, compliance reports, and supporting evidences required for certification submissions.
  • Lead construction-stage sustainability compliance activities to ensure certification targets are maintained throughout procurement, installation, testing, commissioning, and handover stages.
  • Assess contractor alternative proposals and evaluate technical compliance with sustainability requirements.
  • Identify certification risks and recommend corrective actions or mitigation measures to avoid non-compliance or loss of certification credits.
  • Support preparation and review of final sustainability submission packages and close-out documentation.

Site Monitoring & Audits

  • Conduct regular sustainability audits and regular site inspections.
  • Plan, lead, and report audits as required by regulatory bodies and project specifications.
  • Monitor Contractor's Construction Environmental Management Plan (CEMP) implementation and report non-compliance incidents.
  • Issue, track and close:
    • Non Conformance Reports
    • Site Observation Reports
    • Corrective and Preventative Actions
  • Coordinate with third-party specialists to ensure effective implementation of sustainability requirements.

Reporting & Performance Tracking

  • Review contractor monthly sustainability progress reports and supporting documentation.
  • Prepare consolidated sustainability reports in coordination with multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Maintain sustainability trackers, compliance matrices, risk registers, and certification progress dashboards.
  • Monitor project sustainability KPIs related to energy, water, waste, materials, indoor environmental quality, and commissioning.
  • Prepare technical presentations, management reports, and progress updates for clients, internal teams, and regulatory authorities.
  • Report sustainability performance metrics and project compliance status to stakeholders.

Testing & Quality Assurance

  • Ensure sustainability-related inspections, sampling, and material testing are carried out as per applicable standards.
  • Conduct inspections of on-site and off-site materials.
  • Witness laboratory and field tests when required to verify compliance.

Knowledge Management & Business Development

  • Prepare high-quality technical and non-technical sustainability reports, presentations, and technical guidance documents.
  • Conduct research on sustainability technologies, materials, regulations, and industry best practices.
  • Support preparation of technical proposals, bids, client presentations, and sustainability workshops.
  • Mentor and coach junior sustainability engineers and support internal training initiatives.
  • Contribute to development of internal sustainability procedures, workflows, trackers, and technical templates.
  • Promote knowledge sharing and continuous improvement across multidisciplinary teams.

About you

  • Bachelor's Degree (B.Eng / B.Tech) in Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 8+ years of relevant experience in sustainability or related fields.
  • ESTIDAMA PQP (PBRS & PCRS).
  • LEED Accredited Professional (LEED AP).
  • Desirable Certification.
  • WELL Accredited Professional (WELL AP) – completed or in progress.
