Inspiring Excellence: GTC India Employees Making Waves at The Institute of Civil Engineers

As they say, learning knows no bounds, we introduce you to our employees who are a part of The ICE or The Institute of Civil Engineers. A global institution with over 95,000 members worldwide, the ICE exists to improve lives by ensuring the world has the engineering capacity and infrastructure systems it needs to enable the planet and its people to thrive.

In 1818, a small group of young engineers founded the Institution of Civil Engineers, the world's first professional engineering body, in a London coffee shop. Fast forward to over 200 years now, ICE's 95,000 members are from more than 150 countries across the globe and this number is growing all the time.

In this article, we introduce you to 3 such members from the AtkinsRéalis Global Technology Centre in India who are not just contributing to the betterment of the global society but, also making us proud with their exceptional feat in the ICE, all the while handling their work seamlessly.

Smita Swadadkar – Leading the Way as ICE Regional Representative

Smita Sawdadkar is a Chartered Civil Engineer and Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE). She is the ICE Local Representative for Bangalore Region. She is humbled and honoured to lead this Bangalore Local Chapter ICE which includes eminent industry experts and leaders from the AtkinsRéalis Global Technology Centre as well as other organizations within this region.

Whilst working with AtkinsRéalis GTC, she has delivered multimillion and multi-disciplinary large-scale projects successfully as an Industry Expert. 

She also has gotten various opportunities to play key roles in GTC such as Design Transformation Delivery Business Head, Professional Head, LRQA-trained Internal Auditor, and GTC Techno-digital Learning & Development Manager. 

All this wholesome experience, as well as practical experience in commercial /contracts management, construction management, Health, Safety and Wellbeing, Sustainability and Quality Management, makes her a trusted ICE Approved Mentor and Supervising Civil Engineer. 

She takes pride in guiding professionals across regions to gain professional qualifications through various routes based on their experience.

Bridging the Gap Between Complex Projects and Professional Development

Meet  Debabrata

Meet Debabrata Mukherjee

Debabrata is the current Head of Structures Discipline, in GTC India. He is a chartered Civil Engineer and a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers, UK.

He and his team help deliver multi-disciplinary complex projects across the world working collaboratively with their colleagues and clients from various regions and supporting solving some of the engineering problems in society. 

He is the current sponsor of Professional Development in AtkinsRéalis India and works with multiple scheme owners for furthering the effort towards a professional qualification.

He is the current Chair of the ICE Local Chapter, Bengaluru region and was also the immediate past secretary. He works with the ICE regional chapter in hosting and organising various CPD events and activities for the regional ICE members and its student chapters.

He has published papers at various international conferences and is currently an editorial panel member of ICE's flagship journal, Civil Engineering; the first from the GTC.

 Meet  Meet Abhinav Gupta

Meet Abhinav Gupta

Abhinav Gupta joined AtkinsRéalis back in 2018 after completing his internship with the organization. He was one of the first recruits through the very successful "Intern to Graduate" programme. He is a Bridge Engineer by profession and is working on some of the flagship multi-disciplinary projects from the UK within the Transportation business.

He is currently a graduate member with ICE and has also taken up the Vice Chair role in the recently launched "Early Careers Network- South Asia" with the ICE. He has been elected to this global role by virtue of his commitment to the profession and supporting various CPD events in the Bangalore region. He has grabbed and excelled at all the opportunities provided by his mentors. 

Abhinav also represents the Professional Development Team in GTC and is the GTC Graduate Representative in the Global ICE Support Team in SNCL. He is also part of the Emerging Professionals network within the organisation.

When Abhinav is not at work or engaged with the ICE, you can find him indulging in his passion for biking, effortlessly shifting through gears. Alternatively, he enjoys immersing himself in the rhythm of the drums, showcasing his musical talents and grooving to the beats.
