How waste management specialists contribute to a sustainable future

Why is waste management important in sustainability?

The world generates 2.01 billion tonnes of municipal solid waste annually, with at least 33 per cent of that—extremely conservatively—not managed in an environmentally safe manner. Waste management is integral to creating a more sustainable future as it encompasses environmental, social, and economic well-being.

Here at AtkinsRéalis, we consider it our mission to lead the engineering industry in achieving Net Zero as rapidly as possible. Our expertise, commitment and global experience mean we are uniquely placed to address the challenges ahead and identify opportunities in pursuit of a Net Zero economy.

Learn about the benefits of sustainable waste management and waste management sustainability practices and solutions.

What are the benefits of sustainable waste management?

Sustainable waste management plays a fundamental role in building a more sustainable and resilient future for generations to come such as:

  • Promoting a circular economy - sustainable waste management follows the principles of the 5Rs (refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, recycle) which conserve valuable resources and minimize the need for new resource extraction. These principles also reduce the negative environmental impact of waste disposal.
  • Creating healthier ecosystems - proper waste management prevents the release of harmful pollutants into the environment such as carbon dioxide. This leads to improved air quality, and reduced water contamination, which protects biodiversity.
  • Introducing resilient waste management systems - these new systems are better adapted to keep up with the pace of change, changing population trends, and consumption patterns. This improves the longevity and resilience of these structures.

Examples of waste management sustainability practices and solutions

Sustainable waste management has evolved with a focus on reducing waste, increasing recycling rates, promoting resource efficiency, and minimizing the impact of waste on ecosystems. Here are a few examples of practices and solutions:

  • Waste-to-energy (WTE) facilities - these plants use technology to convert non-recyclable waste into energy, which generates electricity and heat. With more of an urgency to make the switch to renewable energy sources, this technology holds the promise to revolutionize our energy landscape.
  • Waste reduction strategies - these strategies minimize waste generation by advocating for reduced packaging, encouraging reusable products, and supporting bulk purchasing to reduce single-use items.
  • Waste audits and assessments - these audits analyze waste streams, identify opportunities for reduction and recycling, and tailor waste management strategies to specific contexts.

We want to empower you to come up with your own ideas on how to embed sustainability in your everyday work as a Waste Management Specialist.

That is why we give our colleagues the freedom to innovate and think differently, boldly, and proudly. This is how we are able to stay at the forefront of creating sustainable solutions and operate the most complex projects.

Shape a greener, more sustainable future as a waste management professional

At AtkinsRéalis, we are committed to making a difference by weaving environmental, economic, and social sustainability into every project to develop a vibrant ecosystem of people, programs, and places.

Are you ready to drive change, contribute to meaningful projects, and create a sustainable future?
