8 reasons to choose a career in risk management at AtkinsRéalis

At AtkinsRéalis, we pride ourselves on offering risk management professionals a thriving environment filled with growth, support, and opportunities. Join us as Doug shares eight reasons why choosing a career in risk management with AtkinsRéalis will be a rewarding experience:

Meet Doug

Hi, I'm Doug, an Associate Director in risk management based in London, in Project & Programme Services' Complex Infrastructure team. I currently lead the National Highways Quantitative Risk Analysis (QRA) commission. People often say you fall into risk management, and it was no different for me.

I began my career in psychology.

After graduating with a BA Hons from Roehampton University and finding it difficult to get work in the field, I decided to give project management a go. I got my foot in the door of a project management office (PMO) as an admin assistant. This gave me a unique opportunity to get a taste of each discipline within the PMO and, being so fresh out of university, soak everything in.

Yes, the risk life chose me.

"Risk Management naturally clicked with me. Nine years later, the rest is history. People stopped asking me to read their minds and started asking me to tell the future."

8 ways to thrive in a risk management job at AtkinsRéalis

AtkinsRéalis has genuinely been one of, if not the best, company I have worked for to date. BIG STATEMENT! Let me highlight a few reasons why:

1. The importance of authenticity in risk management careers

From day one, I felt encouraged to bring my true self to work. This isn't just a tagline; it's a tangible part of the company culture. In meetings, 121s, and even casual conversations, there is a genuine acceptance of diverse perspectives and personalities. This drives creativity and innovation because everyone feels comfortable sharing their unique ideas without fear of judgment. It feels great to work in a risk management job environment where your individuality is accepted, celebrated, and valued.

2. Genuine commitment to employee wellbeing and risk management development

I've experienced firsthand how my managers take the time to understand my risk management career goals and provide the support and resources needed to achieve them. Regular check-ins, personalized development plans, training courses, lots and lots of informal chats, and mentorship opportunities are a few ways they demonstrated this commitment to me.

3. Focus on mental health and wellbeing is not just lip service

Whether through access to mental health resources, free fruit in the office, regular team socials, or simply a culture that respects work-life balance, AtkinsRéalis prioritizes its employees' holistic health. The flexibility in working hours in risk management jobs and the option to work remotely have been game-changers for me. This flexibility has allowed me to maintain a productive work routine, stay fit and healthy with early morning trips to the gym, and be available for last-minute appointments and school drop-offs/pick-ups for my young family.

4. The trust and autonomy given to risk management as employees

The freedom to manage our schedules our way enhances productivity and significantly reduces stress. Knowing that AtkinsRéalis respects and supports my life outside of work makes me more dedicated and motivated to give my best at work.

5. Access to a vast network of subject matter experts (SMEs)

These professionals, across various disciplines, are not only highly knowledgeable but also deeply committed to sharing their insights and experiences. Being able to tap into this pool of expertise means that employees have access to best practices in their respective fields. Leaning on their expertise, mentorship, and collaborative opportunities creates a unique environment for individuals who want to pick up skills fast.

6. Structured risk management development programs

These programs leverage our SME's expertise and include workshops, training sessions, and seminars designed to build specific skills and knowledge areas. They also cater to diverse backgrounds, providing a welcoming platform for professionals transitioning from other fields to apply their transferable skills in risk management jobs

7. The sense of camaraderie in risk management jobs

AtkinsRéalis encourages an environment where professional relationships naturally evolve into genuine friendships, creating a close-knit community spirit that makes the workplace for risk management jobs more enjoyable and collaborative. When your colleagues feel like friends, you're more inclined to go the extra mile to help each other, creating a supportive and cooperative atmosphere. It creates a sense of belonging, boosts morale, and enhances teamwork and productivity, making it a place where people are not just colleagues but true allies in both professional and personal growth.

8. We're always looking ahead

I am keen to see many exciting developments and risk management opportunities play out. Integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into our daily risk management operations is the most relevant. I'm particularly excited about how AI can streamline project management, enhance data analysis, and improve decision-making processes. I am all for working smarter, not harder, using our time more efficiently and effectively. AtkinsRéalis has recently updated our AI policy and created avenues to test the latest software, tools, and AI being developed in today's market to ensure we stay at the forefront of digital innovation.
