Bored with your job? Power up to nuclear.

Hello! My name is Jo. As a Nuclear Safety Engineer at AtkinsRéalis, my experience so far has seen me work across various project lifecycles - from generic design assessments to nuclear new build, generation and beyond. I started with AtkinsRéalis' graduate programme four years ago, having studied Chemical Engineering. This course firmed up my technical and problem-solving skills and (I didn't realize it at the time) prepared me for the diverse challenges of nuclear safety.

Passionate about the planet?

I was drawn to the diverse opportunities available in the industry - Nuclear will play a play a significant role in the government's intended transition from fossil fuels and commitment to reach net zero by 2050. There are lots of new technologies being developed, as well as progress on longstanding projects like generation and decommissioning.

Nuclear is where it's at!

To say it's an exciting time to work in nuclear is an understatement. The Great British Nuclear Small Modular Reactor (SMR) competition is underway, and large-scale projects such as Hinkley Point C (under construction and preparing for non-active commissioning and fuel to site) and Sizewell C, which has very recently had its Nuclear Site License Issued and (hopefully) heading towards Final Investment Decision (FID). With an increased focus on the UK's energy security and national security, the industry is growing rapidly.

"Nuclear power is vital to meeting net-zero targets, limiting climate change, and ensuring national security. It's the very definition of engineering a better future. The role of nuclear in providing safe, reliable, and carbon-free electricity is crucial."

You don't need a specific education to work in nuclear safety

Working in nuclear safety can be a bit 'niche.' So, one misconception is that it would be challenging to pivot from other industries without a nuclear background. But our team has a range of degree and experience backgrounds!

The essential skills we're looking at are your abilities to problem-solve, write concisely, analytical and form coherent arguments. These skills can be found in a wide range of experience backgrounds. The nuclear industry is a fantastic place to grow and develop professionally and personally.

So, if you're looking for a new challenge, consider nuclear safety!

Don't worry that a lack of nuclear sector experience will hold you back. Nuclear knowledge can be picked up. For example, professionals with a background in safety from other high-hazard industries can transition into nuclear. They often bring valuable insights and different approaches. As our team's growth accelerates, AtkinsRéalis invests in recruiting and re-skilling people who are transferring from other industries.

"Our nuclear safety team has a diverse and growing pipeline of work—which means we can really help shape the nuclear industry for generations to come."

Bring your skills and grow your way

The culture is different here. The organization invests a lot in developing employees through technical training, signature training programs, etc. We have a great support structure through the line management community. If you're flexible, proactive, and take ownership of your career, you'll develop very quickly and have a very rewarding career here.

You can work on what interests you

I'm enjoying the sheer number of opportunities available in AtkinsRéalis and the ease with which I can move and work across different projects.

Do whatever keeps you motivated

I like working across different work streams for varying clients and technologies. This means it is possible to work for more than one client at a time and gain a plethora of experiences while holding the same role and team within AtkinsRéalis. This really accelerates your growth and development. There are always new challenges and brilliant opportunities.

You will never be bored!
