Hello, my name is Bobby. After playing professional ice hockey in America and Europe I spent eight years as a Royal Navy submarine weapons and communications engineer. Towards the end of my submariner career, I took on a specific project management role, handling locations and communications for submarines.

The role was highly detailed and fueled a passion to pursue the same work as a civilian.

My civilian career began in consultancy and over several years I progressed from assistant project manager to project manager and then senior project manager.

AtkinsRéalis helped me realize my career goals

Joining AtkinsRéalis as a senior project manager has enabled me to return to the defence sector and achieve my career mission - offering my skill set to the submarine service as a civilian. In my current role I support the UK's submarine programme, which is an honor, and certainly my proudest project to date.

My work on the UK submarine programme

I'm a senior project manager on AtkinsRéalis' North West Project and Programme Services team. My role is to deliver the latest new build facility on a client site, and I also have an in-ternal role as a key account manager. I'm enormously proud to play a vital contribution to the defence sector, which I feel will help engineer the safety of our nations and people.

I'm also enjoying being a BuildForce Ex-Forces account manager. This role involves interviewing and finding potential roles for ex-armed forces candidates across the wider organization. I'm immensely proud of my work supporting ex-colleagues in the military as they embark on their own journeys into civilian life.

Thriving in my civilian career

I've worked at other organizations, so I appreciate what makes AtkinsRéalis stand out; and it's our culture. Our workplace is inclusive, supportive, and progressive for those looking to enhance their skill sets and deliver excellence for amazing clients. I value my colleagues, line managers, mentors, and the organization's wealth of knowledge and expertise - they have all helped me grow and develop my career as a project manager.

I feel I belong and can shape my future here

In the past I've struggled to find an organization that aligns with my way of working, however since joining AtkinsRéalis, I've found the workplace that I would love to stay in for the remainder of my career. Here I can embrace both my entrepreneurial spirit in my current passion for the defence sector, as well as choose to move to aviation or renewable energy in the future if I want to. Knowing I have those choices and opportunities excites me.

Commitments to flexibility and wellbeing here make a difference

AtkinsRéalis' commitments to flexible working and wellbeing have been vital to my success and progression. I work on-site for four days a month, in my local Manchester office for six days a month, and from home for the rest of the time. This mature approach to flexible working gives you the space to develop - and with your own drive, you grow more.

My commitment to work and mental health remains excellent, with zero burnout.

At AtkinsRéalis, we have a hashtag, #MakeItBrilliant. It's about celebrating what makes us proud and happy to work here. I set daily targets to deliver for my health, my clients, and AtkinsRéalis, aiming to make the world a better place through my personal and professional impact.
