Hello, I'm Tahir, a civil engineer at AtkinsRéalis. When I graduated from university, I didn't have a clear idea of the career path I wanted to pursue. The world of civil/structural engineering is so vast that I wanted to ensure that I worked for an organization that would enable me to keep my options open. Somewhere, I could learn and develop in a variety of roles. Where I could ultimately shape my career path once I had a better idea about the industry. What stood out for me about AtkinsRéalis was the magnitude of its footprint and reach within the engineering world.

"AtkinsRéalis promotes an excellent environment to learn, develop, and deliver sustainably every day. The culture encourages us to innovate and constantly challenge the status quo in everything we do. This embeds a push towards engineering a better future in all shapes and forms."

Can you guess the first project I worked on?

Within a fortnight after joining, I was assigned a role on the tunnel team, helping to complete temporary stability calculations and structural analysis on Hinkley Point C!

There are always nerves when you start a new role.

I was eager to make a positive impression, and I wondered whether I'd be able to deliver what was expected of me. I quickly found all my colleagues to be incredibly kind and supportive. My enthusiasm to positively impact the project matched their readiness to provide whatever support I needed. This extended across all grades and seniorities, with subject matter experts as supportive, approachable, and accessible as fellow graduates.

What else do civil/structural grads work on at AtkinsRéalis?

We have opportunities across diverse markets, including roles on both smaller and major projects. There are also opportunities to work in different markets and locations, such as our Global Technology Centre in India, or embedded within client organizations. Ultimately, AtkinsRéalis' expertise and success across all engineering markets means we have the tools to develop your career, whatever your stage you're at and whatever your desired career path.

Expanding my expertise at Devonport

So far, I've been here for three years. Working in the nuclear space has exposed me to the energy and defence markets. The roles available across both markets are endless - and this has meant more than just designing heavy civil structures. On this project, I'm helping to substantiate existing infrastructure for the continued use of nuclear-powered submarines.

It's meant brilliant opportunities in diverse roles!

I've assessed structural performance in response to different magnitude seismic events, and remediated structures to enhance structural integrity. I've also designed steel structures, foundations, and undertaken structural condition surveys and de-structive/non-destructive concrete strength testing. Additionally, I've completed high-risk confined space training with the Exeter Fire and Rescue Service, enhancing my safety and emergency skills.

AtkinsRéalis offers varied, career-long development

My secondment at Devonport reflects AtkinsRéalis' extensive reach across various markets, countries, and organizations. Collaborating with professionals from diverse technical backgrounds enhances my understanding of interdisciplinary challenges and how my work contributes to broader project goals. Being part of this multi-organizational team expands my network and enables connections I might not have made otherwise. The varied tasks and challenges at Devonport highlight the excellent learning and development opportunities at AtkinsRéalis. Being embedded in the client organization also presents challenges, from adapting to new systems to ensuring everything I do enhances AtkinsRéalis' reputation.

Supported, as a carer, without question

Relatively early in my AtkinsRéalis career, I took on family caring responsibilities. AtkinsRéalis supported me by letting me compress my hours across fewer days, which really took the pressure off. Over time, the level of care I needed to provide increased. AtkinsRéalis allowed me to work predominantly remotely. This helped me establish a work/life balance and flexibility to meet my family's needs. At different stages of our lives, each of us may require support from our employer in some shape or form. For me, it's knowing that AtkinsRéalis is an employer that embraces employees' personal challenges and recognizes the importance of taking care of their people.

#MakeItBrilliant: why I'm proud to work here

For me, it's being a part of such an incredible group of people. From day one, you're surrounded by and working alongside extremely talented individuals, from subject matter experts at the forefront of the world's engineering problems to graduates passionate about learning and driving innovation in their chosen disciplines.

Beyond the talent and capabilities, however, you are surrounded by good people. Every single person I've worked with thus far in my career at AtkinsRéalis has become a friend. This is a testament to the nature of the people AtkinsRéalis employs and the culture we promote.
