How Gen Z is finding purpose at AtkinsRéalis: Learning, earning, and leading!

Hello! My name is Matilda, and I'm based in the AtkinsRéalis Bristol office. I joined AtkinsRéalis last September, straight after my A-Level studies, and I'm now in my first year of the Project Management Degree Apprenticeship scheme. The wide range of opportunities I've had since joining, such as visiting the Atomic Weapons Establishment Museum and participating in senior workshop days, have been key reasons for staying with AtkinsRéalis.

Why I chose a project management degree apprenticeship at AtkinsRéalis

I was drawn by AtkinsRéalis' inclusive company culture and forward-thinking innovation. AtkinsRéalis also aligns with my values of focusing on sustainability and #EngineeringNetZero. The organization places a huge emphasis on early career professionals, giving us the opportunity to be responsible for client-facing roles and creating real-world impact. This has resulted in us young professionals having an excellent reputation across the business.

The Degree Apprenticeship blends learning with hands-on experience, giving us one day off per week for study leave when we attend online lectures and complete assignments. Most of the university assignments are work-based, which is great because it encourages you to apply real examples from the workplace and directly implement the knowledge from each module. It's a win-win, combining a full degree with the bonus of four years of practical experience. I've gained many valuable skills, including stakeholder management and business operations.

Developing project management skills through early career opportunities in engineering at AtkinsRéalis

I've worked predominantly on confidential projects as a Project Management Office (PMO) and Business Change Consultant in the defence market, specifically within the defence market. This role has been instrumental in developing my project management skills. Shadowing project managers and taking responsibility for specific tasks has given me insight into the various processes and a clear understanding of their daily routines.

A key skill I've gained is stakeholder engagement and management—working with senior members across the business and external stakeholders has taught me how to communicate professionally and build strong rapport. Additionally, I managed the entire lifecycle of the Wellbeing Dog Service, which originated from the Apprentice Challenge. The project was so successful it became an internal initiative, and I'm proud to still be involved as we explore offering it to external clients.

Leadership roles for apprentices: Managing internal projects like the Wellbeing Dog Service!

The most rewarding part of managing internal projects like the Wellbeing Dog Service is watching the project lifecycle unfold from concept to reality. This has shaped my leadership skills as I manage a team and external stakeholders. Time management was an essential skill I developed due to organizing different events across the region and ensuring I was available to help my team while balancing a client role. This gave me huge confidence in myself. It was also satisfying to see the outcome of the walks, amazing feedback, and a boost in employees' well-being.

Work-life balance and vibrant social culture for career starters at AtkinsRéalis

At AtkinsRéalis, everyone is encouraged to connect and attend the socials designed for us, along with upskilling sessions that bring together people from different offices. These informal settings are a great way to meet new people of a similar age and build strong, personal connections. Since joining, I've formed brilliant friendships with so many people. I've also had incredible opportunities, like attending the Apprentice & Graduate Ski Trip in Val Thorens in March 2024. AtkinsRéalis promotes a vibrant social life and encourages early career professionals to network through events like ski trips, surf trips, and monthly socials.

Ready for a role that lets you balance academic growth, real-world projects, and a vibrant social life while making a meaningful social impact? Explore our fantastic apprenticeship roles today.
