From entry-level to Future Leader with AtkinsRéalis' graduate schemes

Welcome to the first installment of our Future Leaders Series for 2024, where we hear from two standout talents, engineering graduates Rhys and Ellie. They tell us about their life inside AtkinsRéalis, their career passions, and their goals for the year. As members of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) President's Future Leaders Scheme, they represent the future of engineering—and we couldn't be prouder!

Hello from Rhys and Ellie, two passionate engineers building our futures at AtkinsRéalis!

I'm Rhys, an Assistant Engineer in the Design & Advanced Technology practice at AtkinsRéalis' Swansea office. While studying for my MEng degree in Civil Engineering from Imperial College London, I undertook two summer placements with AtkinsRéalis. After graduating in 2022, I rejoined the company as a graduate.

And I'm Ellie, an Assistant Engineer in the Transportation practice at AtkinsRéalis' Cardiff office. I studied MEng Civil Engineering at the University of Bristol and graduated in 2022 before joining AtkinsRéalis. Since joining the organization, I've worked both in the office and on-site, which has given me varied experience across civil engineering projects.

What work do we do as AtkinsRéalis graduates?

RHYS: So far, I've worked on diverse projects, large and small, across the industry, building key skills for my future career. I particularly enjoyed the Sizewell C project, which aims to provide clean energy for six million UK homes. Since joining in 2022, I've had numerous professional and personal growth opportunities and have been trusted to coordinate nationally significant projects, all while being mentored by knowledgeable and enthusiastic colleagues. I always feel encouraged to develop my early career. For example, AtkinsRéalis supports my participation in the President's Future Leaders Scheme by allocating me 15 professional development days to contribute to and attend events and training.

ELLIE: I work full-time as a highways engineer on the A465 Heads of the Valleys: Sections 5 & 6: Dowlais Top to Hirwaun DBFO upgrade scheme as part of the Designer's Site Representative team. My daily tasks include inspecting construction to ensure it aligns with the design and specifications, attending on-site meetings to collaboratively resolve issues, and responding to technical queries while liaising with the design team back at the office. I also collaborate with colleagues at AtkinsRéalis and across the industry to plan and deliver STEM outreach and social value initiatives.

What made us apply to be part of the Future Leaders scheme?

RHYS: The ICE President's Future Leaders Scheme is a prestigious opportunity to work with the ICE President, industry experts, and professionals to positively impact society. AtkinsRéalis has several alumni from the scheme who shared their experiences, helping me confirm that it was something I truly wanted to pursue. Learning from senior industry figures and applying my knowledge to help tackle pressing challenges excites me. I've always tried to understand how the infrastructure we develop at AtkinsRéalis fits into the bigger picture. My time as a Future Leader will allow me to explore this further.

ELLIE: Since leaving university, I've been involved with the ICE. I was the Chair of the Early Careers Network in Wales in 2023 and the ICE Wales Chair's Future Leader in 2023/24. I am keen to continue my involvement with the ICE, and taking part in the scheme will help increase my knowledge of the wider industry and allow me to build my network. Engaging with the Institution and contributing to industry-wide impacts alongside my day job has been really enjoyable, so I was excited to take this to a higher level.

Here's what our Future Leaders application process involves

RHYS: As part of my application, I submitted a CV, reference and my thoughts on what the ICE was doing well and what could be improved. After shortlisting, I had a 30-minute interview with Prof. Jim Hall and two past Future Leaders. Applying was an enjoyable process.

ELLIE: I had to submit a CV and answer a question in line with the President's theme. When I submitted my CV, I tailored it to the role, using examples relevant to the scheme and showing my leadership qualities. I also enjoyed the 30-minute interview with the President and past Future Leaders.

Our goals as a President's Future Leaders for 2024

RHYS: I look forward to working towards solutions for some of the critical industry challenges through ICE's strategic projects. I'm also eager to engage with other ICE members across the UK and inspire more early career professionals to consider applying for the scheme.

ELLIE: I'd like to deepen my understanding of the industry and explore ways to tackle current challenges and contribute to the future of our profession. As part of the scheme, I'll undertake individual research tasks, gaining in-depth knowledge on key topics while developing as an engineer. I'm passionate about promoting STEM careers to underrepresented groups such as women and those from lower socio-economic backgrounds. This year, I plan to continue working with the ICE to inspire more people to pursue careers in engineering.

This is just the beginning of their exciting journey. Follow our social media team on Instagram #InGreatCompany for more updates from Rhys and Ellie as we keep up with their ambitious challenges and brilliant achievements in their year as ICE President's Future Leaders.
