Rail projects in the Middle East at AtkinsRéalis

Infrastructure in the Middle East is developing at a rapid rate. With projected growth of 2.9% by 2030, opportunities in the region aren't slowing down any time soon. Central to this transformation is a rapidly expanding network of rail and transit projects that are reshaping the future of connectivity.

We're playing a huge part in advancing transit at AtkinsRéalis. Through innovation and excellence, our transportation team has a hand in some of the most ambitious rail projects in the region. Our work not only enhances mobility but puts sustainability in the Middle East in the drivers seat.

Here, we'll take a closer look at rail projects in the Middle East and the innovation that pushes them forward.

The growth of transit projects in the Middle East

The Middle East's investments into public transport projects are helping to reduce emissions and create more sustainable mobility services. Rail expansion is a key part of initiatives like Vision 2030 in Saudi Arabia and the UAE's Net Zero 2050 strategy. The urbanisation of the region makes investment in sustainable solutions for connecting cities increasingly important.

The Gulf Railway Project is the foundation of the biggest transit projects in the Middle East. A groundbreaking network that will connect all six GCC nations by 2030, this advanced rail project aims to enhance economic integration by improving the movement of goods and people across borders. Stretching over 2,000 kilometers, it's a bold statement of the region's commitment to shifting regional connectivity to more sustainable transport solutions.

Rail projects in Dubai and the Middle East

When it comes to infrastructure innovation in the Middle East, Dubai is the gold standard. Rail projects are no exception. We've contributed with everything from engineering and design expertise to the seamless integration of technology to support this evolution.

The Dubai Metro, for example, has transformed the way people navigate the city, welcoming over 600,000 passengers each day. Since its launch in 2009, public transport journeys have increased from 2% to 14% in the area. This is a huge step in the right direction on the path toward a more sustainable future

We've also worked on the Riyadh Metro, helping to reduce congestion and carbon emissions in the Saudi Arabia capital. With six lines and 86 stations, this 176km network is one of the many ways we're engineering net zero in the Middle East.

Innovating for a sustainable future in rail projects

Innovation is at the heart of our Middle East rail projects. From modular station designs that minimise environmental impact to eco-friendly construction materials, our work in the region is setting a new benchmark for sustainable transit infrastructure.

In line with Government goals, our focus is on creating infrastructure that not only serves the needs of today but also protects the environment for future generations. We embed green practices in all aspects of our rail project delivery to help take people places faster, more efficiently, and more sustainably.

Technology and data also plays a key role in the Middle East's rail evolution. Smart systems, real-time data analytics, and automated operations are becoming the norm. We integrate these technologies in our rail projects to create solutions that adapt to the challenges of the future and offer high quality transportation to communities and people.
