In the field of materials engineering, every structure rests on an essential foundation: quality. For Frédérick, Assistant Coordinator and Field Technician responsible for Materials Quality Control at AtkinsRéalis Canada, that responsibility is at the heart of his day‑to‑day work. Between construction sites, team coordination, and technical support, his journey demonstrates how a rewarding career can sometimes emerge from an unexpected change in direction.

A career path that didn’t follow the original plan
If you had asked me a few years ago where I saw myself working, I would probably have answered: “In the aerospace industry.”
Having been passionate about airplanes for as long as I can remember, I began my career at Mirabel Airport, first as an air cargo handler and later as a heavy equipment operator on the airport apron. I loved the work and believed at the time that my future lay in that industry.
I enrolled in a Mechanical Engineering Technology program at college with the goal of becoming an aerospace engineer. However, things did not unfold as I had planned.
I quickly realized that the mechanical engineering program was not aligned with what truly fulfilled my aspirations. Although I enjoyed physics, mathematics, and calculations, I no longer felt connected to the program. After several setbacks, I was eventually dismissed from college.
Looking back, that academic setback was probably one of the defining turning points of my career. The summer following my dismissal, I worked for an electrical contractor, and that experience introduced me to the world of construction sites. I was immediately drawn to the hands‑on nature of the work and its tangible results.
That was when someone suggested I consider a career in civil engineering.
Finding my path in the field
Civil engineering brought together everything that fascinated me: mathematics, physics, problem‑solving, and fieldwork. I loved the discipline from the very beginning.
After earning my college diploma, I joined AtkinsRéalis as a Materials Quality Control Technician. From my very first experiences on construction sites, I knew I had found where I belonged.
For two years, I worked primarily in the field before a manager recognized my potential and offered me a new challenge: becoming an Assistant Coordinator.
“Management was never part of my original career plan, but I discovered an aspect of the job that I truly enjoy today.”
This progression allowed me to take on greater responsibilities while staying closely connected to both the projects and the teams.
A multifaceted role
Today, my responsibilities are highly diverse.
In the office, I oversee several key activities, including managing the equipment used on construction sites, coordinating its maintenance and calibration, and monitoring inventory. I also contribute to project coordination, personnel management, as well as the hiring and training of new employees.
I am also involved in recruitment activities at colleges, helping students discover engineering careers and promoting opportunities at AtkinsRéalis.
In addition, I serve as Radiation Protection Officer for Eastern and Western Québec. In this capacity, I oversee regulatory compliance, conduct inspections, participate in employee training, and ensure adherence to the requirements of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission.
When I am on a construction site, however, my primary responsibility remains the same: ensuring that the materials used meet applicable standards and project requirements.
Why quality control matters
I often compare my role to the foundation of a house.
“In engineering, quality control is the foundation of every project. From soils and foundations to structures, we must ensure that the framework can support everything that will be built on top of it.”
On construction sites, we verify the quality of concrete, soils, and asphalt mixtures, among other materials. Our testing confirms that materials meet project specifications and comply with applicable standards.
Once we certify that everything is compliant, work can move forward with confidence. When a non‑conformance is identified, we must determine the root cause, communicate with stakeholders, and contribute to resolving the issue.
An unforgettable first project
Of all the projects I have been involved in, the one I am most proud of took place during my first few weeks at AtkinsRéalis.
I was entrusted with overseeing a large portion of a major road rehabilitation project on Grande‑Côte Road. The project involved every aspect of materials quality control, including soils, concrete, and asphalt mixtures.
My training had to be accelerated so that I could take on the challenge.
“Despite my limited experience, I was able to meet expectations and deliver the required results. The positive feedback I received at the end of the project gave me tremendous confidence moving forward in my career.”
