Marine Environmental Consultant (Water Management Consultancy)
- N/A
This Position is open for Epsom, Bristol, Cardiff, Swansea and Glasgow Offices.
Due to the continued success of our Coastal and Marine Environment Team, we are seeking talented, passionate and motivated marine environmental consultants to join our Team in AtkinsRéalis’ Water Management Consultancy. So, if you are looking to join an established team focused on the delivery of interesting and significant projects, supported by a strong culture of wellbeing, innovation and inclusivity, we would love to hear from you.
This is an exciting time to join a diverse and growing team where you will have the opportunity to not only develop your technical and project management experience across a range of technical areas, but to play an active role in shaping the future direction of the Coastal and Marine Environment team at AtkinsRéalis. The coastal and marine ‘space’ is complicated, a place where different planning, legislative and physical boundaries meet, and they elicit strong feelings in people. There is rarely a simple answer to the questions posed... Our team has a proven track record of delivering a broad range of projects to an even broader range of clients, both in the UK and overseas, including developers, port authorities, local authorities, power companies and central and devolved governments, working with marine management and licensing organisations and multiple statutory and non-statutory stakeholders. EA, NRW, Scottish Government.
As a marine environmental consultant at AtkinsRéalis, you can expect to become involved with a range of flood and coastal risk management projects as well as the environmental impact assessment and marine licensing of port, harbour, bridge and other transportation, coastal and marine infrastructure projects. We provide advice and technical solutions to local and national governments, as well as international clients. We work on habitat creation projects, natural capital, maritime spatial planning, coastal zone management and the Blue Economy.
AtkinsRéalis is one of the world’s most respected design, engineering and project management consultancies, with over 50,000 employees worldwide. At AtkinsRéalis, we offer more than just a job. We offer an opportunity to make a difference and shape the world to benefit future generations and the natural environment.
As part of this commitment, we understand the need for a diverse and flexible workforce, where a work-life balance is important. So, by default AtkinsRéalis offers flexible working, where there is no fixed 9 ‘till 5, no need for a 5-day week, no requirement for a full-time contract, and no requirement to spend all your working time in the office. Our fully integrated IT systems support remote and homeworking. Similarly, AtkinsRéalis’ corporate social responsibility provides the opportunity to give something back to the community, and we run professional networks supporting groups such as local schools, charities, parents, those coming out of the armed-forces and women in engineering.
You will have the chance to develop opportunities and support projects through our increasing portfolio of UK and international work, alongside our staff in Canada, USA, India, Africa and Asia Pacific. As a major engineering, environmental and design consultancy, AtkinsRéalis offers opportunities for consultants to work on a wide variety of projects, including those that make an important difference in people’s lives.
Responsibilities:
- Joining a well-established and successful team, you help play a key role in delivering and managing marine and coastal projects for a diverse client and project portfolio. You will:

- Support the delivery of policy and evaluation related projects.
- Undertake technical reporting and consultations for a wide range of projects, co-ordinating inputs from colleagues, regulators, statutory advisors and other stakeholders.
- Provide support to the national Coastal and Marine team and wider business, as we grow this technical area.
- Support and advise on marine licence applications across the UK, considering the different devolved administrations’ policies, legislation and processes.
- support the team with winning work from internal and external clients.
Requirements:
- Ideally someone with experience of undertaking a range of environmental assessments focused on coastal and marine management, with knowledge of project, resource and financial management. A degree in a relevant discipline is essential and a post-graduate qualification desirable (with focus on marine / coastal management / assessment), with ideally 5 - 10 year’s consultancy experience.
- You will need to demonstrate experience of working on coastal and marine infrastructure projects as part of a multidisciplinary team and have a proven ability to undertake a thorough technical investigation, that presents well-structured, concise evidence-based findings (verbal or written). An understanding and experience of the policy and legislative landscape within which coastal and marine infrastructure development and management sits is desirable. This could relate to ICZM, marine planning, marine licensing, protected sites management / advice, or similar.
- The role requires someone with an analytical approach to problems to develop solutions supported by evidence and taking a range of different opinions into account.
- Experience of specifying, undertaking managing and interpreting coastal and marine surveys would also be advantageous.
- You will be highly motivated, enthusiastic, proactive and focussed on achieving and delivering technical excellence in a commercial environment. Skilled at collaborative working, have good interpersonal skills, be a great communicator and be able to apply technical understanding to real world situations to develop solutions to challenges and follow them through. In addition, you will need to be flexible, adaptable and prepared to take on new challenges, learning and sharing that learning as you go.
