We have a broad portfolio of clients, working closely with organisations such as the Department for Infrastructure, Translink, Ulster University, the GAA, several local authorities and private sector clients. Our Transport Planning team is at the forefront of many fascinating multi-disciplinary projects, including the Casement Park Stadium and the Belfast Rapid Transit Glider project (Phase 2 is currently out for public consultation). We have a long history of providing strategic transport planning advice. AtkinsRéalis prepared the Belfast Metropolitan Transport Plan, and more recently, has provided transport planning and modelling support to help inform the North West and Belfast development strategies.

We have extensive development planning expertise and have supported retail, residential and commercial developments throughout Northern Ireland. Indeed, our team also provides help to our wider business and recently took a lead role in the appraisal of a third runway for Heathrow Airport.

We also work alongside our colleagues in Scotland to support a broad and diverse range of projects in that region. Northern Ireland is a fantastic place to live and work, and we recently moved to modern state-of-the-art offices in central Belfast in late Autumn 2021. We have over 30 staff operating out of our offices in Bristol and Cardiff, with our two teams being heavily interlinked. As part of the wider AtkinsRéalis multidisciplinary design and management team, our transport planners provide a key role in the conception, development and delivery of transport solutions that enable real change locally for transport users and society. Much of the team’s focus is on delivering our commitments as Framework Consultants for several authorities within our region, meaning that we can support the development of local multi-modal transport systems.

Across the wider business, we contribute to projects at a national scale for Network Rail, the Department for Transport, Transport for Wales and National Highways. The skills and expertise of the people in our offices cover the full range of Transport Planning disciplines, including strategy and policy development, sustainable modes design, economics and business case, development planning and data analytics. We have an expanding workload in future transport and mobility, cycle and public realm design, public transport service improvements and net carbon zero. I consider this diversity of balancing investment across modes and technologies is pushing us all in the right direction of achieving something special.

Three words that sum up this Transport Planning Team are welcoming, innovative, and flexible. With our ongoing and pipeline of projects, there is an exciting future. Alternatively if you would like to get in touch to discuss opportunities in the South West & Wales, please send an email via the link below, marking it ‘FAO Dunstan Westbury’.

Our transport planning capabilities

Our Transport Planning capabilities are wide-ranging and ever-changing as we assist our clients in creating sustainable transport systems against the backdrop of the climate emergency. The skills required are continuously developing as we apply new technology and digital data to improve our understanding of travel needs and provide safe, accessible transport networks. At AtkinsRéalis, we encourage our staff to push forward with innovative ideas. We aim to deliver high-quality, value-for-money solutions across a wide range of interventions, including active travel, public transport, rail planning and traditional traffic management and highway schemes.

Why is transport planning important? Our specialists have a variety of skills, including strategy and policy preparation, scheme design and appraisal, modelling, business case development, and stakeholder and public transport engagement, to name a few. We are working hard to include Net Zero targets in everything we do. And this is one example where all our Transport Planners are leaning into and encompassing multi-disciplinary learning. Although we work across four technical disciplines, these areas have significant overlaps through our multi-disciplinary projects and provide opportunities for broader personal learning.
