The road ahead for transport planning in Canada is not just exciting; it's transformative. With the visionary Transportation 2030 initiative steering our course, the focus has sharpened on building a national system that fuels economic growth and creates jobs, connecting communities like never before.

For professionals like Jean-Philippe Akélaguélo, this isn't just a trend; it's a calling, a thrilling journey he's navigating as a key player in AtkinsRéalis's dynamic team.

Jean-Philippe, a dedicated Team Leader and Project Manager within our Eastern Canada Transport Planning team, embodies the passion that drives our mission. We recently caught up with him to uncover what makes his role so rewarding and why he feels there's no better place than AtkinsRéalis to shape the future of mobility.

Why Jean-Philippe loves working in transportation planning

Meet Jean-Philippe: A visionary in transport planning

What is your role at AtkinsRéalis?

I lead projects and a fantastic team within the Eastern Canada Transport Planning group. Essentially, our core mission is to optimize how people move.

Whether it's designing smarter traffic lights, creating dedicated bus lanes, or carving out safe, inviting bike paths, every project aims to enhance human mobility and connection. It's all about making journeys smoother, safer, and more sustainable.

What's the most exhilarating aspect of your job?

The sheer joy of finding solutions to complex problems, especially in the realm of human mobility! It's a fascinating field that seamlessly blends advanced technology, intricate human behavior, and robust engineering.

I believe that getting to work, or simply meeting friends in a park, should never be difficult, dangerous, or polluting. My work directly addresses these challenges, leading to concrete, positive changes for citizens and their communities. Knowing that my efforts contribute to a better quality of life for real people is incredibly rewarding.

What makes working at AtkinsRéalis so special for you?

Being a transport planner here means I'm constantly in contact with an incredibly diverse community of brilliant minds. There's this amazing buzz of initiatives that truly empower everyone to be a vital player in the company's success.

Our teams genuinely benefits from this rich tapestry of perspectives and experiences. It's a place where collaboration isn't just a word; it's how we innovate.

Beyond the blueprint: Jean-Philippe's inspirations

What's your favorite book and why?

Jim Thompson's Wild Town. It's a gritty reminder that we should always be discerning and wary of those who lack integrity.

Do you have a favorite quote or motto that guides you?

Absolutely: 'Today is the first day of the rest of your life.' It's a simple truth that often gives me a much-needed push when project deadlines are piling up. It reminds me to approach each new day with fresh energy and determination.
