From South Africa to Ireland: Curtis’s career leap with AtkinsRéalis

Leaping into the unknown: accommodation, community, and climate

Our biggest initial concern was finding a place to call home during the height of COVID-19 when the housing market seemed as unpredictable as the pandemic itself. To our relief, we found a cozy spot that welcomed us for over two years. Establishing friendships, especially amidst social restrictions, was an understandable worry. But by connecting with fellow South African colleagues who shared our journey, what began as mutual support blossomed into meaningful relationships.

Confronting the Irish climate was another leap. Exchanging perpetual warmth for a cooler environment required a mindset shift. Surprisingly, the long summer evenings became a cherished part of our lives. The winter's chill and darkness, though still a stark contrast to what we were used to, were nothing a roaring fire and layers of clothing couldn't handle.

Embracing a new culture: insights for aspiring expats

If I could impart wisdom to someone in South Africa contemplating a similar move, it would be to open your heart to the cultural differences. Expect things to work differently and look at these nuances as opportunities for personal growth rather than hurdles. The weather might invite you to stay indoors, but I encourage you to brave the elements – there's a unique beauty to be found in every season.

Settling in is a process, and I suggest giving yourself at least two years before passing judgment on your new life. The housing market can be tough, but patience and perseverance will lead you to a place you can proudly call home.

A new chapter: personal and professional transformation

This journey has reshaped our lives in profound ways. On a personal level, starting a family without our relatives nearby has its challenges, but the joy and pride of providing a stellar life for our son make it worthwhile. We were able to purchase our first home – a milestone we're not sure we could've achieved back in South Africa.

Professionally, the move has been nothing short of transformative. With support from AtkinsRealis, I've achieved chartership and advanced to a senior engineer role. I'm now tackling a variety of projects that broaden my expertise and present exciting new challenges daily.

Working in Ireland: a contrast in environment and opportunities

Transitioning to the workforce in Ireland, I quickly noticed the vast diversity in colleagues and clients. Networking extends beyond local borders, opening doors to international projects that were once out of reach. The focus on sustainability and environmental stewardship here is commendable, and employee well-being is held in high regard – a testament to the culture of care that permeates the workplace.

Unexpected delights and nostalgic longings

Living in Ireland has brought its share of surprises. The sense of safety and freedom, enabling evening strolls and after-hours enjoyment, is something we cherish deeply. The historical tapestry of Ireland is fascinating, offering endless explorations of ancient castles and monuments that provide glimpses into a bygone era.

However, there are elements of South Africa we miss – the balmy winters, the familiar faces of loved ones, the ease of a beach day, and the simplicity of a budget-friendly night out.

Building a social network in a new country is no small feat, but sports clubs have proven to be a gateway to meeting like-minded individuals. Participating in our local estate's residents' committee has not only fostered friendships but has also strengthened our sense of belonging. At work, connections with fellow South Africans and others have provided a comforting sense of shared experiences and mutual understanding.

In conclusion, the move to Ireland has been a journey of self-discovery, growth, and rich experiences. For those considering a similar path, embrace the change with an open mind and an open heart. The rewards – both personal and professional – are immense, and the opportunities are boundless. Welcome each day as a new adventure, and let Ireland's charm work its magic on you.
