“Small improvements at design stage can make a big difference”: Pooja on water infrastructure, working across borders, and never giving up on yourself

Pooja is a Civil Engineer based in Pune, working in the Design & Advanced Technology team on outline design for water and wastewater infrastructure projects. Her role spans design development, preparing drawings, coordinating with multidisciplinary teams, and making sure the solutions they propose are practical, efficient, and aligned with what clients actually need.

It’s work that matters, even when it happens behind the scenes.

“Working in the water and environment sector, the impact feels very real,” she says. “Even though we’re often behind the scenes in design, the outcome of our work supports reliable water supply and treatment systems that communities depend on every day.”

She’s focused on the details that compound. “I try to focus on clarity and coordination, reducing rework, resolving design queries early, and making sure what goes to site is well thought through. Small improvements at design stage can make a big difference during construction and operation.”

Growing in confidence, not just capability

Since joining AtkinsRéalis, Pooja’s growth has been as much about confidence as technical skill. “I’ve had the opportunity to work on more complex packages and take on greater ownership of deliverables,” she says. “I’ve grown not just technically, but also in confidence, whether that’s speaking up in meetings, coordinating with UK teams, or managing my time across multiple priorities.”

The international exposure has shifted her perspective. “Exposure to international standards and collaborative ways of working has definitely broadened my perspective.”

Beyond the technical work, Pooja is part of the C2H (Creativity Curiosity Hub)- the cultural group and the Everyone Belongs Women’s Business Network. “Being involved in these groups has given me the chance to connect and collaborate with colleagues from different backgrounds and locations. I really enjoy that aspect, it helps me understand diverse perspectives, build stronger relationships across the business, and grow in ways that go beyond purely technical experience.”

Collaboration and flexibility

“Being able to openly discuss challenges with colleagues, whether locally or across global teams, really strengthens the quality of what we deliver. There’s a genuine sense of teamwork, where you feel comfortable asking questions and sharing ideas.”

And as a mother, the flexibility matters. “Having the understanding and support of my team when it comes to balancing professional and personal responsibilities makes a big difference. When that space and trust are given, it motivates me to be even more responsible and committed to delivering high-quality work. Knowing that I’m supported both as a professional and as a parent allows me to give my best in both roles.”

Her advice

“Never give up on yourself. There will be challenging projects, tight deadlines, and moments of self-doubt, but those phases are part of growth. If you ever feel stressed or unsure, talk to your seniors or teammates. Reaching out for guidance is a strength, not a weakness.”

“Don’t hesitate to take up space; in meetings, in projects, and in opportunities. Ask lots of questions, volunteer for challenging work, and trust your capability.”
