How I built a leadership career in infrastructure engineering

Hi, I'm Martina. I'm a Chartered Engineer and the Managing Director of AtkinsRéalis Ireland. I've been part of this fantastic organization since 2001 and now lead our engineering and design consultancy business across the country. How civil engineering careers transform your future

My path into engineering started back in school. After a conversation at a careers evening, I decided to study civil engineering at Dundalk Institute of Technology, followed by a degree at Ulster University in Belfast. That decision opened doors to an international career – from Belfast to London to Sydney – where I worked as a structural engineering consultant. It's been a brilliant journey.

Supporting STEM careers in Ireland

As a female engineer, I'm passionate about breaking down barriers for the next generation. I regularly take part in mentoring, reverse mentoring, and outreach with my colleagues to support more women in STEM. Through Engineers Ireland's STEPS programme, we visit primary and secondary schools to help children, especially girls aged 7 to 9 and 15 to16, understand how engineering is part of everyday life. Helping girls see a future in engineering

There are still misconceptions around who engineering is for. Many young girls feel it's not a space where they belong. We challenge that by showing just how broad the industry is. From civil and structural to biomedical, telecoms and renewables, there's something for everyone, and the opportunity to travel and make a real impact. Read another female colleague's story.

Entry routes into engineering consultancy jobs

It's also easier to get into engineering than many people realise. There are multiple entry routes, from apprenticeships to level 7–9 degrees. Make sure your next role includes mentorship

If you're starting out, my advice is: get a mentor. Join a development programme. Talk about your career goals, both technical and personal. At AtkinsRéalis, you'll have all the support you need to discover which direction you'd like to take your career and how to get there.

Why I have a reverse mentor

And don't stop there – get involved in the industry. Join Engineers Ireland or the Association of Consulting Engineers of Ireland. Take part in outreach, speak to students, and share your journey. Reverse mentoring has taught me so much. It's helped me grow as a leader and is a brilliant way to connect across disciplines and generations. I'd recommend it to anyone.
