Accessibility that empowers: Giridhar’s story at AtkinsRéalis

Accessibility changes lives and Giridhar’s journey is proof of that. From starting as a graduate to becoming Engineer-1 in project controls, his four years at AtkinsRéalis have been marked by growth, advocacy, and a belief that when everyone belongs, we all thrive.

Read his story in his own words.

My journey at AtkinsRéalis

I have been with AtkinsRéalis for close to four years now. I joined as a graduate and today I work as an Engineer-1 in project controls within the Project and Programme Services (PPS) business. Over these years, I’ve had the chance to work across three different businesses and contribute to some huge projects. Every step has been a learning experience that’s shaped me both personally and professionally.

What accessibility means to me

For me, accessibility is synonymous with freedom, the freedom to experience and interact with the environment without barriers. Personally, it has opened doors to new experiences every day. Professionally, it gives me the opportunity to grow, learn, and contribute without limits.

An accessible workplace is one where everyone is a contributing member of a thriving team, where collaboration knows no boundaries, whether physical, psychological, mental, or sensory.

Challenging misconceptions

Many people think accessibility only benefits persons with disabilities. In reality, accessibility benefits everyone. At some point, all of us will encounter barriers to access. That’s why it’s so important to build, design, and contribute towards universal accessibility.

Tools and adjustments that helped me

Access to assistive tools such as screen reader software, a flexible workstation, and physical adjustments like tactile maps in the building has helped me work efficiently and independently. These reasonable accommodations, along with the understanding and support of my teammates and managers, have been key to my journey here.

The power of allyship

The first step towards being an ally is awareness. Don’t assume, ask and empathize. Understanding context and being open to possibilities goes a long way in creating a safe and supportive workplace.

Advocacy and leadership

Employee resource groups (ERG) play a big role in building awareness and sparking solutions. As someone who has led an ERG that raises awareness and supports employees with any type of disability or health condition, I’ve seen firsthand the difference these platforms can make. I also had the privilege of serving as President of our Toastmasters Club, helping colleagues become confident speakers and communicators.

Milestones that matter

A key milestone in my career was being recognized as Star Performer of the Month for the Sizewell C project in December 2023. This recognition gave me confidence that my contributions matter and that they don’t go unnoticed. It was a powerful reminder that our voices are heard here.

Innovation for accessibility

The shift towards digital-first environments and workplace audits has created new opportunities to innovate and explore accessibility. These steps not only help remove barriers but also push us to think about how we can make our workspaces truly welcoming.

Looking ahead

Accessibility is not a destination; it is an ongoing journey. Everyone’s experiences are different, and every contribution matters. The best way forward is not to compare but to learn together.

When we remove barriers, we unlock possibilities. Giridhar’s story is one of many that prove what’s possible at AtkinsRéalis.

Join us and build your career in a place where accessibility, growth, and opportunity go hand in hand.
