The latest innovations in Structural Engineering

Structural Engineering is pushing the boundaries of what's possible as more technology and resources become available. These advancements allow for more innovation and transformation, unlocking new, efficient, and reliable structures.

Structural Engineers are in a great position to solve some of today's most pressing challenges including transportation needs, and climate change.

At AtkinsRéalis , we take great pride in creating functional, unique and thought-provoking structures. But we do more than just that. We help our clients drive change and we do this by adopting the latest technologies so our Structural Engineers are equipped to innovate. Here are some of the latest and most exciting innovations in the field:

Structural Health Monitoring

Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) is a way to observe, monitor, and analyse structures over time in real-time using sensors. It allows engineers to detect damage and predict maintenance needs.

This software equips engineers with data that affect structures such as weather conditions, traffic, and prestressing (the level of compression in concrete beams). With this data, engineers can estimate loads and their effects, the state of fatigue, and forecast health.

SHM improves safety, reduces maintenance costs, and expands the lifespan of structures. We put safety at the heart of everything we do at AtkinsRéalis , to safeguard people, assets and the environment. Safety plays an important role in every project we undertake, enabling us to handle major developments and interact with various communities, businesses, governments and other stakeholders.

Building Information Modeling

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a digital representation of the physical and functional aspects of a structure such as a building, bridge, highway, or tunnel. It allows for collaboration between structural engineers, architects, and contractors all without physically being on a site. This improves efficiency in projects and reduces errors.

We are at our best when we combine technology with forward-thinking and collaboration. Everyone at AtkinsRéalis has a chance to voice their ideas and contribute to projects. James Ward, Structural Engineer for the Mining & Metallurgy group, based in Toronto, Canada, explains how collaboration is central to his role:

"Collaboration is essential in our work, especially on large projects like Coeur Rochester that have a large scope. Several companies and teams are working together to achieve a common goal. It's about embracing technology and having open communication."

Advanced Materials

Advanced materials enhance structures with strength, durability and sustainability unlocking a greater potential for what Structural Engineers can accomplish.

For example, Fiber-Reinforced Polymers (FRPs), possess an exceptional strength-to-weight ratio that has many applications where weight reduction is required. These polymers consist of high-strength fibres which makes them corrosion-resistant and non-conductive, making them well-suited for concrete structures such as bridges.

We realise that our colleagues are at their best when they have the best resources available to them. This is why we strive to adopt the latest technologies so our engineers can do what they do best - create sustainable solutions that connect people, data, and technology to design, deliver and operate the most complex projects.

Bring your innovation to AtkinsRéalis as a Structural Engineer

At AtkinsRéalis , one of our core values is innovation. We've fostered a collaborative environment where we encourage everyone to think boldly, proudly, and differently.

We offer more than just a job. We offer an opportunity to make a difference and shape the world to benefit future generations and the natural environment.

Realise your full potential as a Structural Engineer and apply to AtkinsRéalis today.
