How can Canada cleantech be used to design a greener future?

As the world pivots toward sustainability, clean technology is in demand. In Canada, cleantech is not just a growing sector, it's a huge part of the country's environmental strategy. That's because Canada is one of the world's biggest producers of carbon dioxide emissions, and is suffering the repercussions. The country is warming twice as fast as the global average, partly due to its need for heating and long-distance transportation in arctic climates.

The need for creating sustainable solutions in the Canadian construction industry has never been more pressing. Innovative cleantech solutions could be the way forward. Here, we look at how the Canadian cleantech market can be harnessed to help build a sustainable future.

Canada's cleantech market

Canada's cleantech market is booming, and it's only predicted to continue growing. Canada is well-positioned as a global leader in cleantech, and has embraced recent AI innovation in the field. Having experienced significant expansions over the past two decades, its $80 billion contribution represented 3.5% of Canada's total GDP in 2023.

With 13 Canadian companies featured in the 2024 Top 100 Global Cleantech Companies list, the impact of the nation is undeniable. Further to this, the country's ranking in the Global Cleantech Innovation Index rose from 7th in 2014 to 2nd in 2024.

As the government continues to invest heavily in start-ups and clean energy and technology, Canada becomes an increasingly attractive place to look for construction project management jobs if you want to make a difference.

How is cleantech currently being used across Canada?

In Canada, cleantech is used in a variety of ways, including helping to combat climate change. It's been used in a number of AtkinsRéalis projects across the country. We believe in mitigating our impact as much as possible and we're on a mission to engineer net zero. We are on board with Canadian strategies to reduce GHG emissions, drive innovation, and create new construction project management jobs.

One notable example is the development of energy efficient buildings and the promotion of circular built environments. This process minimizes waste by reusing material and reducing the demand for new raw resources. Encouraged by the Canadian government, we are streamlining our real estate portfolio to reduce our carbon footprint.

The future of cleantech in Canada

The future of cleantech in Canada is filled with promise. With more businesses signing climate pledges and making efforts to mitigate their energy use, the world is moving toward a low-carbon future. Canada is uniquely positioned to make leading changes, with plenty of investment in precision farming, energy infrastructure, and more.

As one of the world's biggest producers of greenhouse gasses, Canada also has some of the most significant opportunities in the sector. There are plenty of ways businesses and communities make substantial changes, all of which will greatly impact the country and the wider world.

The Canadian government is committed to net-zero emissions by 2050 and is paving the way with investment, government support, and subsidies. Through solutions such as precision farming and smart infrastructure, cleantech in Canada offers vast opportunities.

Our project managers have an exciting opportunity to be at the forefront of global change in the construction industry and beyond. Canada's cleantech future is here, and you can be a part of it.

Cleantech is creating more job opportunities in Canada

One of the most exciting aspects of Canada's cleantech boom is the job creation that comes with it. As cleantech solutions expand, they're generating a demand surge for skilled professionals in fields such as project management, sustainability consulting and environmental engineering.

We're also committed to diversity in hiring in this growing sector. We work with local First Nations groups in Canada to engage more Indigenous people in this industry. Indigenous knowledge of environmental sustainability is invaluable, and integrating these insights into cleantech practices benefits both the land and the economy. We believe in collaboration and strive to provide training to make our jobs more accessible.

Why now is the time to pursue a career in Canada's cleantech industry

Now is an exciting time to pursue a career in the cleantech industry in Canada. The demand has never been higher and we have a ton of exciting projects and opportunities. Whether you're interested in green building or clean energy solutions, Canada cleantech is perfect for those passionate about actioning change.
